Feature Request: Cloudless Notifications and Remote Control
« on: September 02, 2014, 11:59:52 pm »
I know everyone raves about "the cloud", but in light of the recent security breach dealing with Apple's Cloud servers, I'd like to see some more options for those of us who aren't looking to turn their home security over to the cloud.

1. Make the app directly interface with the A+ through the device's internet IP address. Sure, this would require you to setup the app and type in the IP address of your A+, but as openwrt already supports dynamic DNS support through several free services, this is pretty painless. Setup dynamic dns, then setup the app to point to the dynamic dns address. No need to use the cloud to point to the specific device. Let someone else handle that. No need to be dependent on routing and up-time of the securifi servers.

2. Allow notifications to sent via an on-board SMTP (email) server. If you incorporate a SMTP service on the A+, it could be used to send email notifications directly to external POP email accounts.   I have a an IP camera that does this and 9 times out of 10, I get the email, via Gmail, within 1 minute of being captured.  Again, no need to depend on Securifi's servers to provide you notifications. As long as email and your router is working, you're good to go. Additional polish can be applied to the trigger menu by being able to specify the trigger by specific sensor and sensor state change (Door closed to door open) and to only make the email trigger active during certain time periods or when actively armed via the keyfob.

The advantage of making these features available is it would give more flexibility to the A+ to meet more people's needs, would dilute the security risk by not making every instance dependent on Securifi's servers, and increase service availability, because again, it would not be dependent on a single point of failure that is beyond the user's ability to control or fix. This would also provide a means to Securifi to avoid over congestion as users could be directed to use the external resources as needed.

Call me an old fuddy-duddy, but I lock my home up at night, myself. I don't ask other people to do it for me, nor do I hire other people to do it for me, let alone ask strangers to do it for me for free.

1. This is something I've already answered elsewhere, but the long of the short here is that it would take us significant time and effort to do this as it would require a complete platform redesign and it's not going to happen this year for sure.

2. Might be possible, but I can't make any promises as we do have a fair few more pressing matters to fix first. Should be easier to do than 1. though.
