How to Improve WiFi Link connection speed
« on: July 22, 2014, 12:05:16 pm »
Hi everyone.
Any general advice on how to improve link connection speeds using the Almond+ 2.4 and 5 GHz net?
I recognized that all clients (laptop/android and apple devices) connect with 76mbit max although capable of much higher speeds. The clients are close the the Almond+ so distance cant really be a factor. I am thinking it has something to do with the encryption since it says "mixed"? Should I switch it to AES/WPA2 only? Would that help?
Hopefully someone can chime in here.
Thanks,
Flo ???

What kind of devices are you using?
As you can see, my phone with 802.11ac support connects just fine at 433MHz.
Laptops ought to connect faster than 76Mbps though and so should tablets, but you might want to be a little bit more specific in terms of what devices you have.
I don't get more than 72Mbps on 2.4GHz though, so it looks like you either don't have any 802.11ac devices or any devices capable of higher speeds.

Hey Lars,
My laptop is on 2.4 GHz using Intel Wireless-N-1000 which is capable of 300mbit. Still It connects with 72.
My Nexus 4 uses the 5 GHz using 72Mbit linkspeed max. If I start my old Cisco Wireless N router, the nexus and computer connect with 150mbit.
There must be something settings related here that is not right. I ordered a tp-link ac1200 usb stick for my computer to tinker around with this but I am 100% certain something is not right here.

To add this here again... even if I don't have any AC specific devices, the N and/or A speed should definitely be >100mbit.

This may not be relevant, but I initially gave the 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz networks the same name, and my phone seemed to always pick the 2.4 Ghz version. Once I separated them and explicitly connected to the 5 Ghz network, my speed went up to 433 Mbps.

Thanks :)
I have them separated from the beginning. I assume all my devices are using wireless n currently which should be faster than the 72mbit Im getting. Looks like they are stuck to 20MHz channel width because 40MHZ should do 150mbit.

Have you tried doing a hardware reset?
I know this is a pain, but you can save and restore all the router settings via the web UI.
If that doesn't help, I'll have someone from the software team look into this, as it doesn't seem to affect anyone else at the moment.

Hmmmm.... Let me wait for the ac adapter to arrive to see what happens if I use that one.
Otherwise I can try the reset later. The weird thing is that my laptop connects with 150mbit for about 5 seconds and then falls back to 76. I assume both speeds are representing wireless N but the difference being 20 vs 40 MHz channel width.
Will keep you updated.

Not quite, your notebook should always connect at 300Mbps if 40MHz channel width is enable and you're within a reasonable distance from the Almond+, unless it's a 1x1 adapter that supports 40MHz channel width as then it would connect at 150Mbps, but as you say, it's a 300Mbps capable adapter.

This is so strange. My laptop connects to my old Cisco N Router @ 150mbit. I will be performing a factory reset tonight and report back.
I have no luck with the Almond+ so far in terms of connection link speed. I see it connecting with 150mbit then it falls back to 76mbit after about 5 seconds and stays there.
I ordered a AC1200 USB stick to test the AC speed but I really like to get the full speed on the N-band as well...

Also, maybe some other backers could double check their link connection speed and report back? Am I the only one with this issue?

This might be a silly question, but did you try following these instructions: http://forum.securifi.com/index.php/topic,1184.msg3453.html#msg3453

Hi cranecj,
Yes I did. Thanks for the follow up though :)

I just bough a brand new TP Link AC1200 USB stick. This one does connect with 144mbit on 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. However, I cant get any of my other devices (which used to do 144 on my old network) to connect with that speed.

I still believe there is something wrong with the channel width on the A+. Anyways... using AC... I get close to 900mbit link connection, however I have to say that the actual transfer speed to my My book Live (Connected via Gigabit Ethernet) is rather disappointing. I get around 12MB/sec which is really really low considering the link speed.
