Getting the Almond+ to redirect the DNS requests is pretty easy.

Static routes set as the following

Lan 8.8.8.8 255.255.255.255 10.10.10.254 (provided you've left your router IP default) metric 2 MTU 1500
Lan 8.8.4.4 255.255.255.255 10.10.10.254 (provided you've left your router IP default) metric 2 MTU 1500

You might also need to go into OpenWRT and set the DNS servers in DNSMasq and ensure Strict order is selected (again, in DNSMasq).

Im pretty sure that chromecast does not directly support 5Ghz... And theres something about it wanting to be on the same network as the host streaming to it... (if you have a router with 5Ghz and connect via 5Ghz, but yet the chromecast connects under 2.4... sometimes it doesn't want to *see* the chromecast. Its gotten better at this since the last few firmware updates to the chromecast however...(think it may have something to do with the move away from DIAL protocol)...

Well, I got it working.

I tried things mentioned on this thread.  I poked and prodded at the router until I was just about to give up, when suddenly it started to work.  I have no clue why it started because after an hour, I was just changing multiple random things because I have no clue what I am doing.

Right now the wireless settings are 11NGHT40, Channel 10, US, WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK Mixed Mode, auto. But honestly, that could all mean nothing.
