OpenVPN client
« on: August 17, 2014, 03:56:34 pm »
Hi there,

I've just uploaded the latest firmware (R065?). I was wondering if there is any plans to support OpenVPN client service on the Almond+? I have an account with IPVanish and they support different VPN protocols including OpenVPN and I would like my Almond+ to act as an VPN client so that I don't have to login separately on my PC's or mobile devices. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Cheers
John

Possibly, yes, but it's not going to happen for a few months.

hengjohn,

It wouldn't be officially supported by securfi, but you could look at openwrt support for openvpn.  You could likely download the openvpn packages for openwrt and get it working.  I haven't done it yet, but I plan to try the openvpn server for openwrt.

EDIT:  Nevermind, looks like the packages aren't compiled for the processor used by the almond+

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the info. It looks like there is a OpenVPN server already package within the Almond+ firmware (inside openwrt section as you've mentioned) but I was looking for the Almond+ to act as a OpenVPN client (connect out to a OpenVPN server). That way all devices behind the Almond+ device would access the Internet via VPN instead of each device creating a VPN tunnel on it's own.  Let me know if you've found otherwise. Thanks!

Cheers
John

I have managed to get ipkgs compiled for kirkwood/freescale arm5 working fine (A+ is arm7). YMMV you need to modify the opkg.cfg to point at a compatible arch on mainline openwrt.

here is mine.

Code: [Select]
#src/gz snapshots http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/g2/packages
#src/gz snapshots http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/kirkwood/packages/packages
src/gz snapshots http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/kirkwood/packages/base
arch all 100
arch kirkwood 200
dest root /
dest ram /tmp
lists_dir ext /var/opkg-lists
option overlay_root /overlay

Note! You will need to opkg install --force-depends to ignore libc and other issues, I used the nossl version in my quick test. You might want to use the statically compiled polarssl version so that you don't run into ldd linking issues.

Please note that because of the ancient 2.6.32 kernel and the kamikaze base versions shipped with a+ there will be issues. Pressure is needed on Securifi and their suppliers to publish source and patches upstream to mainline openwrt. I know this is a difficult task but supporting binary blob platforms in the long run is more difficult.

Pressure isn't needed, we'll be releasing all the open source components and the SDK in a bit. Right now we're simply busy trying to fix all the issues, but once the next firmware is released, we'll get this stuff sorted out.

Lars, have you gotten this stuff sorted out?  I tried using opkg to install the openvpn client and got errors.

Have you checked in the software development section of the forum?
We've released the source code and there's already someone that has compiled most packages there.
