Home Occupancy
« on: August 23, 2014, 10:20:46 pm »
A lot of automation depends on home occupancy.   Almond+ is in a fairly unique place to make this easy:  if any of a particular MAC addresses that I specify is connected, consider the house occupied.  In my case, I'd use the MAC addresses of our cell phones.  If either cell phone is connected, the system would consider the house occupied and react accordingly.

I hope Securifi considers this as the system evolves!

To take this a step further: this can be done with the key fob that was available for purchase, or similar as well.

Sure, we're already considered something like this, so let's see where we get to.

Second Jasonl99's idea. Some stores already do this by having access points that watch your MAC as it moves from point to point in the store. Thus they know if you spent a lot of time in a particular department. Combined with knowing when you use a cash register they can start to figure out more of your profile and then "identify" you as you walk in later on.

Having your house able to (eventually) set the lights as you want, start some music, etc... When you get home is very interesting. It could even open the garage or unlock the door for you especially if paired with a secondary validation such as a keyfob. Let's face it, if "they" have your keys and phone they could get in anyways if they know where you live.

This would be great, would have the hallway lights come on for one.

Add me to the list of "YES PLEASE"

Based on MAC, not key fob.  I don't want to be required to carry yet another thing on my Bat Belt.

Ya, 100%, based on my phone arriving home (however that happens, MAC would seem to make sense) would be excellent.

I think a lot of phones sometimes shut off wifi when idle to conserve battery, so I doubt this would really work that well.

Only if configured that way. I tell mine to stay on no matter what..  wifi doesn't burn as much battery as talking to a cell tower with weak signal (or even GPS or network location for that matter)..

If someone wanted to utilize this they would have to make sure of any phone limitations anyways. The feature is awesome (I would love to use it) but I doubt "average" users would be the audience for it.

I have looked into this idea of geo-fencing , and it does have some serious security issues that need to be thought through. At first I loved the idea of having my front door unlock, porch and living room lights automatically come on as soon as my phone connected to my home WiFi as we puled into the drive. Think about this though, you are always on your home network when you are home.
Let me put forth this scenario,it's late in the evening you are out back in the hot tub with the significant other having some wine, listening to music and somebody can just walk into your house because you're phone is connected to your network so the front door is unlocked. In another case you may have your phone PW protected, to get past lock screen to open apps, but it still connects automatically. You forget your phone at the pub, somebody gets/knows your address and now has the ability to just walk into your home, right past any and all security you may have.
It may sound great, but has way too many security risks involved. I can deal with having to unlock my phone and tap an app to turn on my lights and open the door. I have a motion detector linked in on the front porch anyways that turns on the lights as I pull in and I can unlock the door from the car if I have my hands full. Nobody in our house carries house keys anymore anyways since we put in the Schlage touchscreen locks.
