I'm thinking there would be no need to convert the protocols.  Correct me if I'm wrong, though please.  Once the Zigbee module is provisioned into the Almond+, it should just 1:1 repeat anything coming or going from or to the alarm system.  There'd just be a little bit of Zigbee header traffic that this unit should know how to filter properly. The conversion would have to occur in the driver that one would have to write, in the Almond+.   In that sense, it would be similar to just converting RS232 to USB, and plugging it into the Almond+.
Both the Zigbee module and the alarm system RS-232 port expect an exact protocol.  The Zigbee module is not a transparent bridge like a WiFi - Ethernet bridge (access point) or the Ethernet to serial adapters.  Ethernet to serial adapters are around the same price on ebay.

That little doodad would be much superior.  We could run it directly to their lan, either as their primary router in the basement, or to an almond+ next to the thermostat on the main floor.

EDIT:  I suppose I come from the northern climes where basements are ubiquitous.  I wouldn't know how to do my job in the south :P
