"Hack" idea with Aeon door sensor
« on: February 17, 2015, 10:44:06 am »
My iPhone has a nite-ize magnet disk on the back, allowing it to mount in the car. Since the Aeon door sensors use magnets to identify open and closed states, I found another way to use the sensor "manually" in absence of a key fob-type button.

I stuck the battery-holding side of the Aeon on the wall near the front door. I don't use the smaller magnetic part of the sensor at all.  As a result, the sensor thinks the door is always "open". When I walk out the door, I wave my phone magnet over the sensor, and that creates a momentary "closed" reading.  An Almond+ rule then takes over and turns off every z-wave item in the house. Nice way to ensure the coffee pot, lights, fans, etc., are all turned off in one simple step when I walk out of the house.

Alternately to the phone magnet, one can mount the small part of the Aeon sensor on a keyring, and use it the same way. (Or just use other store-bought adhesive magnets on daily carry items)

I know there are plenty of other ways to accomplish the same thing with other sensors, buttons, and rules. But since many z-wave devices are not yet supported, I hope the hack might be useful to some.  Wanted to give something back since I've certainly appreciated all the help I've gotten from y'all.

Cheers, Rob
