New to Android. Basic questions
« on: March 31, 2015, 11:23:16 am »
All,

I am planning to wall mount an android tablet (because they are so bunny cheap :-) ) and use that as a controller for my house. The one I am looking at is here . It is Android 4.4 and 1024x600 .

I just want to check how the App would look on the tablet with that resolution. Will it be full screen ? If not, what resolution tablet should I be searching for.

Yes, it'll be full screen, but we don't support horizontal orientation at the moment.

Edit: Apparently it did :-)

I have done just this. I use ultimate rotation control app. It can be used to force any app into any orientation. It isn't officially supported but works just fine. Resolution etc is off so scrolling takes longer but it works. I'd like to build a dashboard style app, that could be used to display common sensors / info but have no experience with that. Lol.

Off-topic, but how did you mount the tablet and connect it to a charger?
A bought a tablet for the same purpose months ago but still haven't found a clean way to mount it...  :(

Apparently I submitted my last post without explanation... Must've been in a rush. Basically I took a blank wall plate, snaked a low voltage cable to it, placed 4 magnets and a qi charger behind it. Opened up the tablet case, installed 4 magnets and a qi receiver and viola. It took some fitting to get everything lined up and it still stops charging every now and then for a few seconds ( I think my blank plate is a little too thick, I should've bought cheap ones) but it stays at ~94% usually. It slides right off when I want to use it. I had set it up to turn on with motion detection, didn't love it, then I had to using day frame but it was pretty useless because of its location so for now it just remains with the screen off and when I walk in and need it I walk up and push the power button on the side. It would be nice to use a tablet with QI charging native and even nicer to find one that has QI charging and docking magnets but I don't know how sturdy those usually are. I'd like to build a dashboard to control the almond sensors and other info but as I said I have no experience with that.

Could you post links to the Qi charger and receiver that you used?
And, while you are at it, the magnets, too?

These magnets, be careful not to let them slam into each other by accident they are powerful but fracture easily. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EIR8J90/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This charger, it is nice because the plug is movable making it easier to fit into the wall plate. I used a different one at first, less than ideal. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Wireless-Charging-Accessories-Qi-Wireless-Charger-PCBA-Circuit-Board-With-Qi-Standard-Coil-DIY-UQIP25/32234575474.html

This is the receiving coil. Obviously you will need a tablet that uses a micro-usb port for power (yes some of the cheaper tablets use a dc 5v input so make sure you check) and make sure you get the correct direction of the plug there is one with the wide side up and one with the wide side down.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/191353396754?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=490473804548&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

There are many of each of these available on ebay, ali-express and amazon. At different price points, with different features and different shipping times. Some devices will have these options available specifically for that device, particularly the receiving coil.

Thanks for the links. Searching around I see outputs in the range of 500ma - 1000ma (from the receiver coil side).
Did you see any higher than 1000ma?

I have not seen ones above 1000mA on the receiver output. I am still looking though... Still planning out that particular addition to my setup (scattered tablet controls).
