Anyone have suggestions for a Zigbee/Z-Wave sensor that would alert a user if somebody broke into their car? This would be a case of a car parked on the street at night, that would be within range of the router. The sensor would be turned on during the night and off in the day. Also, once the car drives out of range of the router, it obviously won't be accessible anymore. But it could be turned on 24/7 if the person was traveling out of town and left the car within range of the router.

I do not know if any of them are exactly what you are looking for but something like a glass break / vibration sensor might do the job. I just did a quick Google search and found a bunch (searched on z-wave glass break sensor)... so probably easier to run a search.

I will put one example of what I found:

Is this type of thing what you were thinking? If not... some more details may be handy.

I was thinking the same thing. A vibration, glass breakage sensor . Not sure how that would work though, if it was constantly being moved out of range. I would think that it should reconnect when back in range, but you might have to trigger it a few times to get it to reconnect. Not really any different than having to set your car alarm though.

Good ideas. I'm wondering if this multi sensor would work:
http://aeotec.com/z-wave-sensor

The most important will be the vibration sensor coupled with the motion sensor. I think it's better than the "Vision Z-Wave Shock" vibration sensor which is solely a vibration sensor and requires being attached to the glass, which would not be practical and a little conspicuous.

I'm thinking the Aeotec multi sensor could be installed somewhere down in the console or under the drivers seat. That way the motion sensor won't be set off any time someone walks by the windows but will be set off if they actually enter the car. Also, since it couples as vibration sensor, hopefully it's sensitive enough to notice/alert when somebody is breaking the windows and/or entering the car.

I have no idea how it will behave constantly leaving and returning to the network. Hopefully I'll buy around Black Friday/Cyber Monday and then try it out. If anyone reading this has already tried (or tries) this particular Aeotec multi-sensor, feel free to share your experience.
