Blocking Google DNS
« on: June 22, 2015, 07:44:39 am »
Hi, Having trouble blocking Google DNS 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4.

Purpose for blocking the DNS is for using the Roku 3 in Australia and viewing Netflix US.
The Roku 3 doesn't have Built in DNS settings so I'm using the Almond+ as a sort of DNS slave.

These are the settings I'm using to try and achieve this..

Destination - 8.8.8.8
Netmask - 255.255.255.255
Gateway - 10.10.10.254
Interface - LAN
Cost - 2
MTU - 1500

Destination - 8.8.4.4
Netmask - 255.255.255.255
Gateway - 10.10.10.254
Interface - LAN
Cost - 2
MTU - 1500

After doing this I can still ping 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, is there anything I'm missing or need to change?

Thanks,

I'm gonna get flamed for this:  Do you really want someone on this forum to help you accomplish something that is at most illegal and at a minimum unethical?

All you've specified here is for requests trying to get to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 to be routed through your .254 gateway, so your requests are taking the same route as all your other traffic.

All you've specified here is for requests trying to get to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 to be routed through your .254 gateway, so your requests are taking the same route as all your other traffic.

That statement would be true if I selected WAN as the interface, but selecting LAN successfully blocks the destination address.
I reset my router and tried the same method as I put forward earlier and it worked flawlessly.

So for future reference:

Go to static routes and enter

Destination - 8.8.8.8
Netmask - 255.255.255.255
Gateway - 10.10.10.254
Interface - LAN
Cost - 2
MTU - 1500

Destination - 8.8.4.4
Netmask - 255.255.255.255
Gateway - 10.10.10.254
Interface - LAN
Cost - 2
MTU - 1500

to block Google DNS for whatever reason.
