Frustrating isn't it. That 14/2 Romex has 3 wires (although the ground is likely unprotected and on LED strips the colors are the grounds). If you wanted a single color you would be all set.

How difficult would it be to rewire it so the Romex went to outlets you could plug into? That would be one solution. The other is to use the Romex as pulls to get the new wires through. The Romex is going to be substantially larger than any wire you need for the RGB strips. 18 gauge wires are appropriate (here is an example):

This could be done but the downside is each run of LEDs having to be controlled independently.

Some of the runs would be no problem to pull RGBW extensions through.  Other runs would pose a problem due to being stapled behind the drywall.

It seems as though the best option is to forego the current direct wire setup and run RGBW extensions between the cabinets.  For me it is difficult to justify tearing up the walls in order to upgrade to RGB/W.

I know the feeling. I try to upgrade spaces and make things easier in the future as I do work on the house. But every time I finish an area so far I wish I had thought of something more to do while the walls are opened. Cabinets would be the same way. No way do I want to mess up the existing ones we have.

Here is the parts list I had created in case it may be useful for other forum members.  Or in the event I change my mind in the future.  :)

RGB/W 18 AWG Extension Cord
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0154H7BLE?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_3&smid=AGHA0KSISZ8QZ

RGB/W LEDs (dimmable and waterproof)
LEDENET - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q1N1B26?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_2&smid=A3SY4WN81ZEM06

Controller (partially works with A+, dimmable and RGB)
Dresden Wireless electronic ballast FLS_PP -
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NMSQ4QQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A2LX0E0JY4R2Y

Wall Switch (on/off/dim)
GE Z-Wave Smart Dimmer 12724 - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006LQFHN2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
Or would this interfere with the Dresden controller?

Transformer to convert 110AC to 12/24vdc

Rather than add an electrical outlet to plug into I would just cut off the end of the power cord and connect to the existing Romex using a couple wire nuts.

Nice list, but as you wondered the GE would interfere with the Dresden.
