Sylvania Smart+ RGBW LED Strip Kit
« on: April 28, 2018, 07:44:59 pm »
Brand: Sylvania
Website: https://consumer.sylvania.com
Model Name: SYLVANIA SMART+ ZigBee Full Color Indoor Flex Strip Starter Kit
Model Number: 73661
What unit was it tested with: Almond 3
Protocol: Zigbee
What functions work / don't work: All functions basically work although setting color/white could be easier.
What Batteries / Power Supply: DC Power Supply
Purchase Location: Amazon
Price Paid: $35
Notes, Comments or Limitations:
Devices are detected as "ColorDimmableLights" which works fine for most functions. On/Off works perfectly as does the dimming and color control. However trying to get it back to just the Warm White once you have set it to a color is not that easy. One thing that could really be useful with these is that they use pretty simple 5 wire RGBW LED strips. So while you only get a few feet that basically all have to be connected together with the kit, you could add other ones you purchase online pretty easily (at most having to swap some wires at the connector).
Photo of item attached: No.

I'm glad you tested those. I saw an article about them the other day and wondered how they would work. At that price, its cheaper than buying the dresden controller.

Any idea if the controller is waterproof? I assume not but this should work, I would think with the correct LED strip, to control outdoor waterproof strips as well.

Controller does not seem waterproof to me. The power has no water resistant features. Oddly the LED strips it comes with are the sealed in variety and are labeled for outdoor. But their connection to the controller is just standard pins that would corrode. I could see using this for a fully outdoor project with some DIY of course. Especially putting full length RGBW LEDs with waterproofed connections.

For that price even switching out the led strip and diying an enclosure if one couldn't be found would be reasonable.

Exactly. The LED strips are the most annoying part of these kits. I wish you could just easily buy the controllers. Heck, I do not even need the power supply in most cases.

Somebody needs to design a line of DIY friendly ZigBee (or Z-Wave, but cost is a problem) boards that would be fairly generic and allow people to place and customize easier.
