Title: 802.11 AD ... not AC
Post by: erikboehringer on November 27, 2013, 02:24:39 pm
with 802.11ac meant to be a stop gap specification (like 802.11g was until the 802.11n spec was finished), are you planning to have support for 802.11ad?

see here for more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_Gigabit_Alliance

i am sure that you already know about 802.11ad, but i was curious if it was going to be supported in almond+   ...  and not just 802.11ac

i can not wait, and i WISH i could be a part of the development/testing/etc ...but i was to late apparently in becoming a backer and being a part of that. if there is someway that i could become a part of that...awesome, but so far i havent received any word back. i have contacted customer support, and other avenues .. currently i am waiting to hear back.  ;D

As 802.11ad operates at a frequency of 60GHz, no, it will not be included in the Almond+.
Keep in mind that the range of 802.11ad is only likely to be in the ~10m range and you quickly see that  802.11ac is not a stop gap solution, in fact, 802.11ac and 802.11ad has little to nothing in common.

As to your second question, please check your email.

I too am starting to dream up all sorts of Revolv + Nest+Fibaro integration ideas and am regretting missing the DEVELOPER option.  Is there any way to join that party late?

PC Magazine article: WiGig is great, but it won't replace your Wi-Fi network (http://www.pcworld.com/article/2048404/wigig-is-great-but-wont-replace-your-wi-fi-network.html) explains it pretty well.

WiGig definitely has it's uses,  but the 10m/30ft range makes it inappropriate for replacing an entire Wi-Fi network.  I could see implementing it within my Livingroom,  to make transfers fast between Portable devices and the main network,  but I would hold off until "real world" information is available for it,  and there is no sense purchasing this until I have portable devices that would take advantage of it.

I usually keep my Laptop connected to my network via Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi in order to maximize speed,  especially when transferring large volumes of data to/from my Laptop,  but I would probably add WiGig to my existing network,  if it was affordable,  could be easily integrated into my existing network,  and if I owned any devices that could take advantage of it.  (My crusty old Laptop only supports 802.11a/g or Gigabit Ethernet).

At this point,  I simply want to play with 802.11ac and HA,  which is exactly what the Almond+ is designed to do for me.
