Title: Private Internet Access VPN
Post by: coreygator on February 04, 2017, 12:17:58 am
Has anyone been able to get Private Internet access to work on the Almond+? They have instructions for DD-WRT OpenVPN but i cant seem to correlate it to how Almond is setup.

@ coreygator,

Almond+ supports only Open VPN client through Open WRT. If you PIA has no restriction then, we can setup Open VPN client on Almond+, by going to Almond+ Web UI-->Advanced-->Open WRT. Ensure, you have all the correct details from PIA.

Hi

I have the same issue as OP.  My VPN provider (UsenetServer) has VPN instructions for DDWRT and Tomato, but none of them match to the OpenVPN Client screen.  I have tried to best match up the settings from DDWRT and Tomato but it does not work.

How do I get the VPN Client settings to work on the Almond+?

thanks

OpenVPN client interface on OpenWRT is broken. Basically, the script fails to change routing properly, plus DNS also dies for some reason. I've spent weeks talking to support about this on firmware R089, they've done a ton of remote testing on my unit and promised a fix (which didn't happen in R090). They gave me a set of instructions to manually enable and disable OpenVPN by SSH-ing to router and manually rewriting several configs. Obviously, far from convenient, but you can try making a script. Obviously, if you mess up and fail to revert, you'll have to factory reset the router to regain connection

Can confirm @Artik response. I also had a ticket open with Securifi back in January to help fix VPN issues. After a couple weeks of back and forth the support guy finally said that it's a known issue and it's logged to be fixed. Haven't heard anything since though. Any news on this from a forum admin?

I agree, I was going to retry OpenVPN setup (haven't tried in the last firmware iterations, but glad I checked in here before bothering.

Anyone get this going?  PIA has a great deal going on and I would like to get it setup and running on Almond +.

I would like to bump this thread for visibility and:

1) Show additional interest in a solution or workaround (use Almond + as a vpn router)
2) Ask if there is any news or updates on progress
3) Request if a user "dummy" guide or walk-through on the proper configuration and success with a tier 1 vpn provider (e.g. PIA) could be provided once a solution is made.

4) Suggest a possible feature request: Creation of a dashboard or VPN specific tab (like the Rules) that we can do the following:
a) Quick Enable (Active) / Disable (Inactive) button of VPN service
b) Create VPN traffic rules - ie. route by device (mac), IP, wired, or wireless to travel or not travel across VPN connection
c) Configuration script upload (these could be generated by the VPN service)
d) Performance test dashboard (ping, latency, etc) ...

Basically, a dedicated tab that we can easily configure, manage, test, and evaluate a VPN connection (activate by a simple radio button either on demand or always on). For example - I would love to 1) configure my Almond + with a VPN Service Provided script, 2) test the connection for simple latency and throughput, 3) activate on demand , and 4) direct device-specific traffic through the VPN connection.... while allowing other devices to route outside the vpn.

I am open the feature request may be over reaching, naively thought through, impractical (<- insert technical face palm), or not seen as having universal support - but I feel things are moving toward VPN service as the next "mainstream" user feature requirement. I think it would be a competitive advantage for sure.

I'm really interested in some sort of VPN support (PIA, IPVanish, whatever).
The workarounds I've seen are not really tenable. I don't believe they're reliable enough to make the time commitment.

Right now my Almond+ stops letting 5GHz devices join to the wireless network about 4-10 hours after a reboot. So I may ditch Almond+ anyway. It was a cool experiment. But not reliable after the most recent firmware.

yes, 2 years later and securfi still doesn't support VPN. Lame company.

I subscribe to IPVanish VPN service and use it on both my home PC and iPhone
and I access the internet through the almond+ connected to the cable modem
(Optimum). The only problem I run into is that I must disconnect from the VPN
service in order to transmit email (SMTP). But, that's a restriction imposed by
Optimum, not the Almond+.

Pardon my ignorance, but what would be different were the Almond+ to support
VPN natively, which is what I think people are discussing in this thread?

The difference is that all your internet traffic would go through the VPN, not just devices you have separate VPN service set up for. Difference in implementation of it. I have a VPN on my phone, desktop, and laptop but have no need to VPN my TV, Amazon Fire or other internet devices.

How many times have we heard this over the past 3 years ?

It must have been on the list for a long time. I hope it gets sorted soon.

I'm replying to also add my request to fix the OpenVPN issues, and/or update OpenVPN.
It seems the OpenWRT we have has an old OpenVPN that's missing fields that the guides are using.

This is blog post describing where to get your guide
https://helpdesk.privateinternetaccess.com/hc/en-us/articles/219457267-Can-I-use-the-Private-Internet-Access-service-with-my-router-

This is the guide I was using as reference.
https://helpdesk.privateinternetaccess.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005754123-Setting-up-a-Router-running-DD-WRT-Firmware

It seems that near the end we need to apply DNSMasq settings but I don't think we have that feature.

Bump. I too would like PIA VPN capability.
