Title: Unusually high number of garbled packets since installing R65
Post by: bryanlyon on August 20, 2014, 07:32:53 am
After installing the new firmware version on my Almond+, I've been getting a MUCH higher number of garbled packets.  Downloads regularly fail verification, SSH connections fail with a lot, Pictures on websites have major glitches until I force a reload, and .  Unfortunately, I am not sure of the exact cause and it's irregular enough that I don't know how to gather information or replication information, but I am willing to try if anyone has any ideas.

Hi Bryanlyon,

I am sorry to hear about the trouble you faced with the Almond+. Rest be assured we are there to assist you. We have never faced any issue like this while testing and it is something which we are completely unaware of, however, in order to diagnose and resolve the issue completely, we need some additional information and possibly a quick phone support session would be more fruitful. Hence, please do let us if you are fine in working over a phone support session and for any further communication you can send an email to[suspicious] ashok.kumar@securifi.com and cc to joe.john@securifi.com. I am not sure if I'm having the same issue, but since replacing my router with the A+ I have noticed that my Time Machine backups (which occur over Wifi) are always asking to be rebuilt and .dmg downloads from website seem to be corrupt on both of my laptops, plus my iOS devices have issues downloading/updating apps but the matter seems to be resolved after leaving the house and/or turning off WiFi and using the cell phone network

So this didn't happen at all with the previous firmware?

I can't say whether it happened or not with R064 since I updated to R065 right away after unboxing my Almond+

Just thought I'd say that I didn't see this behavior on the previous firmware, but see it all the time now. I can't download things on Android or OSX because it constantly fails. Also, my Chromecast is having tons of troubles. You can see the picture degrade heavily and then eventually video locks up, followed not too long after by audio (with Netflix). I'm willing to help however I can, just say how and I'll do it. I can't do much in the current state....

I've experienced similar issues, download problems, garbled images, etc.  I'm on a Mac.

I have a Mac household with two Mac laptops and 3 iOS devices showing weird behavior.

I was going to write a script that just copies files back and forth and calculates MD5sums just to see when/where corruption occurs. I'm also in a condo so I do have overlapping Wifi networks in my environment on both 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands.

Does the Almond+ have netcat (nc) available if I SSH into it?

I think I'm having the same problem. Everything I've been downloading and installing seems to be corrupted on both my mac, and PC. I have also had some trouble with transffering files to my nas. I'd get a popup saying it couldn't find a file but I click retry and it continues to work.

Edit.

Unknown if it would have happened before, R65 is the only firmware I've used. Should also add that the Almond is running in AP mode and my network is setup like this with PC, MAC, and NAS connected by ethernet.

Cable modem->Airport Extreme -> Almond+ -> PC, Mac, NAS

I'm using a PC, and pulled down 4 copies of the firmware file, all arrived identical. Running R065.

Doing some testing last night, taking mine out of AP mode fixed the issue for me. You guys want to test also? I know AP mode is what I want to be on in the end, but if its an AP mode only issue that helps the devs narrow down their issues I would think.

Can all you please try the above suggestion? It would really help to know if this is isolated to the AP mode as it would reduce the time it would take the software team to figure out the problem.
Title: Possible way to induce garbled packets in R065 and figure out a fix?
Post by: reedog117 on August 23, 2014, 11:30:51 pm
I'm trying to figure out a way to replicate the issue, but I'm having trouble -- here's what I'm trying:

Setup:
2011 MacBook Pro is connected via WiFi to the Almond+ via 802.11n (MCS 13-15)
Almond+ is connected to a Cisco Catalyst 2960G
Macintosh VM is running on an vSphere cluster also hooked up to the above switch

The MacBook Pro is the only device connected to the A+ via WiFi.  All other devices are going through other networking gear, with a pfSense firewall controlling access to the Internet.

On the MacBook Pro:

Code: [Select]
pc-macbook:~ pat$ dd if=/dev/urandom of=250MBtestfile bs=1m count=250
250+0 records in
250+0 records out
262144000 bytes transferred in 17.196924 secs (15243656 bytes/sec)
pc-macbook:~ pat$ md5 250MBtestfile
MD5 (250MBtestfile) = 5862b0c4be5e7bfb668fcb0fac503471

Then on the Macintosh VM (hardwired):

Code: [Select]
mac-vm01:~ pat$ for i in {1..20}; do nc -l 1337 > 250MBtestfile-recv ; md5 250MBtestfile-recv ; done

Then on the MacBook Pro:

Code: [Select]
pc-macbook:~ pat$ for i in {1..20}; do cat 250MBtestfile | nc mac-vm01 1337 ; sleep 5 ; done
This causes the laptop to send a 250MB test file 20 times to another listening Mac.  The listening Mac should output the same MD5 checksum 20 times, and this checksum should match the original calculated on the sending Mac.  This seems to work okay in both directions no matter which end does the sending, but what I am noticing on the Almond+ is this:

Code: [Select]
top - 03:21:24 up 5 days, 22:11,  0 users,  load average: 0.08, 0.03, 0.00
Tasks:  94 total,   1 running,  93 sleeping,   0 stopped,   0 zombie
Cpu0  :  0.3%us,  1.0%sy,  0.0%ni, 61.2%id,  0.0%wa,  0.0%hi, 37.5%si,  0.0%st
Cpu1  :  0.3%us,  0.7%sy,  0.0%ni, 74.0%id,  0.0%wa,  0.0%hi, 25.0%si,  0.0%st
Mem:    432392k total,   125184k used,   307208k free,    12500k buffers
Swap:        0k total,        0k used,        0k free,    35328k cached

Software IRQ time seems abnormally high to me.  I've seen it peak at 50-something on one CPU and 30-something on the other at the same time.  That's a lot considering there's only one computer connecting to the Almond+ and everything else is back going through my old access point.  I'm wondering if high loads that bring the A+ to 100%si or 0% idle time on either/both CPUs is what is causing this problem to occur.

I think the best way to stress test the router is to have 5-6 computers connected to the same Almond+ doing this test at the same time.  If packet corruption is occurring, we should check that the md5sum's are borked when the router seems to be pegged.

I am having the same issues. I got my Almond+ a few days ago, immediately upgraded it to the new firmware, and put it into access point mode. Things I am seeing:

Netflix & Plex on the Chromecast often stop playing video.
Many downloads are corrupt.
Putty SSH connections sometimes fail with: Incorrect MAC received on packet
Remote Desktop sessions sometimes fail with some strange error about encryption.

One night I told Co-Pilot on android to do GPS map updates. I woke up and saw that it had not finished. I watched it and it would get to about 120MB or so into the update and then start over. After seeing this a couple of times I canceled the update and looked at my bandwidth accounting system and my Android device had done 40GB of data transfers throughout the night. My home ISP has bandwidth limitations and overage charges so this was not something that I want to see happening.

I got the Almond+ to garble a packet, but I can't figure out where on the unit I can find logs that might provide me a bit more insight? Any Securifi staff members want to help me out in tracking this down?

I also tried setting up logging via the OpenWRT interface via System > System and going to the Logging tab, but nothing is showing up on the syslog server on my network.  In addition I tried doing a 'tail -f /var/*.log' on the Almond+ itself but didn't see anything relevant related to connections.

Scenario:

Proof that packets are getting garbled:
Code: [Select]
pc-macbook:~ pat$ while true; do nc -l 1337 > 250MBtestfile-recv ; md5 250MBtestfile-recv ; done
MD5 (250MBtestfile-recv) = af565185e7267f959ff6f0dac30eea3c

Title: I narrowed down the problem!
Post by: reedog117 on August 24, 2014, 05:46:30 pm
I narrowed down the problem! I think it has to be something related to the wireless driver, but it's actually a one-liner to recreate the same conditions that cause this error to occur.

To test, I'm just downloading a ~16MB DMG file from adobe.com -- some sort of Flash update.

On the router itself, running the following command, it seems like the file is not getting corrupted at all, so it seems that the wired connection seems to be functioning normally.

Code: [Select]
root@almond-ap:~# while true; do wget -q -O /tmp/test.dmg http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flash/updates/11_5_1/mac/Adobe-Flash-Professional-CS55-Up
date.dmg ; md5sum /tmp/test.dmg ; sleep 1 ; done
2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51  /tmp/test.dmg
2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51  /tmp/test.dmg
2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51  /tmp/test.dmg
2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51  /tmp/test.dmg
2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51  /tmp/test.dmg
2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51  /tmp/test.dmg
2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51  /tmp/test.dmg
2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51  /tmp/test.dmg
2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51  /tmp/test.dmg
2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51  /tmp/test.dmg

However, this is totally not the case when doing the same thing from my Mac:
Code: [Select]
pc-macbook:~ pat$ while true; do curl -s -o test.dmg http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flash/updates/11_5_1/mac/Adobe-Flash-Professional-CS55-Update.dmg ; md5 test.dmg ; sleep 1 ; done
MD5 (test.dmg) = 04c73ea13a0196a7e3bc4208d1ec3842
MD5 (test.dmg) = 2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51
MD5 (test.dmg) = 02b6fe08ff8f1471c54ab24d1c7f2db8
MD5 (test.dmg) = 2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51
MD5 (test.dmg) = f60d60bcede0c4d8f56bd9390ee9add3
MD5 (test.dmg) = afa022417a1320e77920acd877df3852
MD5 (test.dmg) = 2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51
MD5 (test.dmg) = 2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51
MD5 (test.dmg) = 2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51
MD5 (test.dmg) = 2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51
MD5 (test.dmg) = 2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51
MD5 (test.dmg) = 2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51

The problem seems to be exacerbated when there are multiple devices transferring data over wireless at the same time.  Errors seemed to be induced if I am performing other actions on the Internet at the same or transferring at high speeds between wireless devices on my network.  For example, running the above command on my Mac while copying a file directly off my TiVo or running a speed test on speedtest.net will cause the MD5 checksum to go all over the place.

Code: [Select]
MD5 (test.dmg) = 2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51
MD5 (test.dmg) = 2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51
MD5 (test.dmg) = 2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51
MD5 (test.dmg) = 2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51
MD5 (test.dmg) = 0bd88a269a2c31ce54ea12b5b648b641
MD5 (test.dmg) = 66a7c672172fd4c0064109b794078806
MD5 (test.dmg) = 55d43ccbc3c4e74ea9638ed4a6a43f69
MD5 (test.dmg) = 2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51
MD5 (test.dmg) = e7a82aab848a574d52fffd44054b4bfa
MD5 (test.dmg) = 2d9bcdfe75375cba3e63dafdce976c51

MD5 (test.dmg) = 4b0fbb945348db313a577a2c43c9ceb1

I'm guessing a buggy wireless driver is to blame?

@reedog, are you in AP mode? Or just the default router mode?

EDIT: Realized you said A+ in AP mode in one of the recent posts. Could you try in regular/router mode to see if it gets the same? I know it seems to fix it for me, so if we can have someone else confirm maybe that will point the devs in the right direction

I just tried in regular/router mode and I can't seem to induce any corrupt packets.  However, I did notice that sometimes curl would hang when trying to download from the same site (adobe.com).

Unfortunately I can't do more extensive testing since I have a ton of other stuff in the home that I can't knock offline.

I am having the same problem. Most downloads are corrupted when using the Almond+ over wi-fi. Using two other routers, the same files are downloaded correctly. I am having the same problem in both a Mac and a PC.
I am trying to download the latest version of JRiver:

Ok, we've pin-pointed this to be an issue with the AP and it's a driver issue.
If anyone is seeing this in any other mode, please let us know ASAP.

Glad to hear you've got it pinpointed. Any idea on how soon we'll get an update? Not trying to be pushy, I know these things can take time. I'm just really missing AP mode :)

Thanks!

I'll try to give this a shot after work this evening. But isn't the connection to the WAN port required for the mobile app connectivity and such? Or was I just imagining that when I tried it that way a couple weeks ago?

In AP mode , All the Ethernet and WIFI interface are into the single bridge and DHCP server will listen on Bridge interface. So  if you connect with any of your "Router 1" LAN port to Almond plus [ AP mode ] LAN port,  Almond plus will serve internet to your client and it will get internet also.

-> This way it will maintain connectivity to cloud [ mobile APP ] in AP mode .

As of now , Please use only LAN port in AP mode

I haven't noticed this issue for myself, but I did have a question.

Just out of curiousity, shouldn't any gabled packets be picked up by the TCP stack?  I thought TCP packets had a checksum and handshake for this very reason?  Or are the packets regenerated at each connection point?  Same for UDP although there is no handshake.  If the router were garbling a packet, wouldn't the end device (say, the Mac), throw out the packet and (for TCP) request a resend?

This has nothing to do with that. It's a driver related issue and we're working on fixing it. The workaround for now is, don't use the WAN port in AP mode.

I still have garbled data in AP mode when using the LAN ports instead of the WAN port.

I switched from the WAN port to one of the LAN ports and haven't seen any corrupt packets since.

My router no longer shows up in the Almond+ Android app though. Says it is offline.

This here is what I was worried about, as I saw something similar. I see the same now. It seems to me that the A+ only connects itself to the internet over the WAN port. Its livable for me to not have it for now since I don't have any sensors yet.

Hi guys,

same pb here : can't rsync or scp properly on some machines at home that are on wifi or when I am on a computer on wifi.
Typically :
Code: [Select]
Corrupted MAC on input.
Disconnecting: Packet corrupt
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (176648918 bytes received so far) [receiver]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at /SourceCache/rsync/rsync-42/rsync/io.c(452) [receiver=2.6.9]
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (33278 bytes received so far) [generator]
rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at /SourceCache/rsync/rsync-42/rsync/io.c(452) [generator=2.6.9]
or on scp
Code: [Select]
Corrupted MAC on input.
Disconnecting: Packet corrupt
lost connection

All of these machines are Mac, but I'm NOT in AP mode. All works fine on ethernet.

I've tried to reboot all machines (including the Almond+) with no luck.

When I curl a file (usually a test file, curl -fO http://test-debit.free.fr/image.iso) I can see a drop (it downloads à 10.5MB/s, then 30 seconds later, fall down to 1MB/s to up then another tim to 10.5MB/s).

I've got the same problem when transferring files from my FTP at work to my computer (connected to the Almond+ through WiFi). The download or upload are dropping all the time.
When I try the transfer through LAN from the Almond+ it is completely stable (been stable for 2 days straight now)...

I'm in AP mode as well.

Here my original post on the problem (didn't find this one at the time, sorry): http://forum.securifi.com/index.php/topic,1725.0.html

Will try the switch thing from WAN AP mode to LAN AP mode tomorrow to see.

are you using Almond plus WAN port in AP mode ?  if so , change to LAN port and try .

I did try that today and it worked perfectly for me. I'm transferring a big file from my FTP since 4h and it never dropped. I also put some stress on the network at the same time by restoring an iPhone from iCloud and neither connections dropped at any time. Perfect.

Thanks!!

I'm also on R65 and I'm seeing corrupt frames both in AP mode and router mode (router mode with disabled DHCP server and using only the  LAN ports). Switching between using the WAN port or one of the LAN ports did not make a difference in AP mode.

Interestingly enough the corruption only seems to occur when using the 5GHz radio. Does this make any sense?

Hmm.... when I was getting the corrupt frames, I was using the 5Ghz radio -- I haven't done any testing though on the 2.4 radio.  I'll try some things this weekend and see what I find.

Does anyone know when R66 is supposed to come out, and if a bunch of these problems will disappear?

Seems I also have corrupted packets in 2.4 Ghz mode. This is when I'm connected to the LAN port in AP mode

When I tried your download test I actually saw a few corrupt downloads even on 2.4GHz (2 out of 40 tests). It indeed seems to be a problem on both bands, but only when the data rates are high enough (2.4GHz is completely swamped here so it took longer for the issue to show up). This is in router mode using a LAN port (basically used as an AP, DHCP server disbled). This setup was the least bad, but AP mode certainly is the desired mode for me to run.

We definitely need less broken firmware ASAP, or a way to at least mitigate this issue, it sure is an annoying one..

We were going to release the new firmware next week, but it's going to take another week, as we need to do some additional testing.

Any possibility to get access to a test version of this firmware to see if it solves these corrupt frame issues? In a future firmware it would also help a lot if the device does not recalculate the checksums when forwarding packets (then it would have been a lot more obvious that it misbehaved). SIlent data corruption / bit rot is never fun.

So I'm now seeing this, at least on 5Ghz.

I'm in router, not AP mode, and copying from a wired server to a wireless client (Macbook Pro retina late 2013 model) I'm seeing corruption.

Testing using RSYNC it will abort with:
Corrupted MAC on input.
Disconnecting: Packet corrupt

especially on larger files.

I know there's an update incoming for this, but since most of the complaints are about AP mode, I wanted to make sure the Securifi Team knew it affected both the router and AP modes.

Thanks

Should this be fixed in R066 or is this the 'AP mode problems not fixed" in the release notes?

It's not fixed in R066, we expect to have a fix for this in the next firmware release.
We didn't want to delay R066 as it was nearly done, so we decided to go ahead and release it without this fix.

Considering the severity, is there any chance of a hotfix? I am losing about 1/3 of my performance (relative to other routers) WAN -> LAN right now.

+1 for a priority hotfix... actually please stop working on anything else.

Almond+ is completely useless with both WAN and LAN ports (tried uplink through both).

On a different topic, please get the firmwares uploaded to proper webspace, GDrive complains about quotas when not logged in (to an unrelated Google Account).

Using OSX clients on 2.4 and 5 GHz

Please note this is not just OS X devices but all iOS devices as well.   They are pretty much useless with this bug.    Cannot download updates, new apps, any new content.    I have been forced to stop using the device.  The lack of any status updates, workarounds, target dates for a fix is disappointing.

Hi,

I just installed the almond + and have been testing it out for a few days for a friends setup.

It works fine on all ios devices I have used and I have it hooked up to two ReadyNAS's for testing.
I did some tests to a new retina MacBook pro and was getting 40-50MB/s transfer speeds from the NAS which I thought was a bit slow (transferring 2-3GB files each). Was hoping for closer to 100MB/s inline with the 1300mbps.

I tried to setup a new time machine backup and whenever it started trying to time machine backup when a transfer was going it would kill the transfer over wireless and then the backup just died. Had to turn on and off the wireless to reset it and kill the timemachine backup. Seems inline with what you guys were saying. Hoping this gets fixed ASAP as this is a critical feature.

Let me know if you want me to test anything or would like more details.

Reuben

The Wi-Fi performance is unrelated and we're aware of it and we'll get it improved once we've fixed the bugs.
You actually have one of the few computers that can even take advantage of the full 802.11ac speed, so this is something that's not affecting most people.

I know you probably hate to put any pressure on your developers, but any kind of estimate/timeframe on the next firmware release?  I had to switch to my older Apple Airport extreme because the issues with garbled packets/downloads was too much.

Just wanted to throw my hat in the ring. Here's my setup:

Verizon FiOS 75/75 service, using their ONT -> VZ Provided Router via MoCCA.

Almond+ Running R066 connected to VZ Router via Cat5e, running in AP Mode, as the main wireless network in the house (VZ router's wifi is turned off)

Several Mac and iOS Clients mostly all running on the 5GHz channel, with a single security camera running on 2.4 GHz. The security cam is a G client, so it drags that whole network down and thus I try to keep everything off of it. Most of the Macs and all the iOS devices are N devices. 1 Mac is 802.11ac capable.

I first noticed the data corruption trying to download the Xcode 6 GM DMG (I'm an iOS Developer) and getting consistently corrupted downloads. Ended up downloading at work and was fine. I finally realized it was an issue last night trying to download the 10.9.5 combo update (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1760?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US) and consistently, over 20 times, getting invalid checksum errors trying to mount the DMG. None of my iOS devices could update to iOS 8 either, like others have mentioned. I connected in via Thunderbolt->GigE direct to the Almond, and it downloaded fine.

I tried swapping from the WAN port to one of the LAN ports, to no avail. Switching to router mode *did* fix the issue, but now I can't (easily) access any of the stuff on my main network. Yes, I know you can just punch in an IP address in Finder's Connect to Server, but that's not going to work for the non-technicals in the house. The location where the FiOS enters the house makes running ethernet prohibitive without first pulling the current Coax cable out, so yeah, really need AP mode to be serviceable.

on my MacBook. I'm running the A+ in router mode with R066 firmware and got the same checksum for ~50 tries. All looking good. I tested both 2.4 and 5 GHz networks.

More details: The router is hooked up to a D-Link DSL modem, about 14Mbs downstream, provider is Sonic.

This issue is for some reason only affecting less than 1% of our backers, so this is what's so strange.

As I've mentioned, we're working on a fix, but it involves a lot of things, so it's going to take some time as it involves a lot of the core drivers that we're using.

Hi,
I realised tonight that I wasn't on the latest firmware (I had been checking with the lcd and it said it was all good!)
So I updated to the latest R066 firmware on the web UI. And tested out timemachine on my macbook pro. Please note this is an older macbook pro and was only on the 5ghz n network.

It worked fine. I was able to backup to time machine no problems. Hoping that everything works on the new macbook pro when i get to test it later in the week.

PS looking forward to the unlocked gigabit speeds when they get unleashed :-)

Thanks

I ended up going back to AP mode for now, since I don't have another WiFi router. In double NAT'd setup (My A+ sits behind my FiOS router because I haven't gotten around to bridging the FiOS MOCA setup yet), I can't connect to my work's IPSec VPN. Since the garbled packets usually don't impact my daily use, I'm OK dealing with it for now so I can keep working, but would really like it fixed so I don't have to worry about it.

Hello - has anyone else experienced an issue with corrupted iOS/apple downloads? Initially I thought it was an ISP (verizon fios) issue but now I am suspicious that it is the almond plus as everything is going through it for wifi. I tried running traceroute -F google.com 1500 to see if it was an MTU issue but I didn't see a packet drop. This ended up wasting several hours of my time after having to drive to the apple store to get one of the iPads restored. I haven't tried switching back to my other router but when I connected to another access point on my network one of my previously corrupted mac updates worked.

Another Mac user here. My Almond+ is not in AP mode, and it has the R66 firmware. I've switched off Wifi in my Apple Time Capsule and just connected it via Ethernet cable to one of the ports in the back of the A+. Since then it cannot reliably back up my MacBook Pro using Time Machine. It tells me every other day that a verification of the backup has failed, and it has to recreate it from scratch (which takes ~20h). Previous to this I had nearly 1 year of backups with no problems.

My LAN setup is:

[BT Fibre modem] -> Almond+ ~> 2.4 & 5GHz Wifi (same SSID for both)
-> Ethernet -> Apple Time Capsule
-> Ethernet -> Homeplug (power line networking) -> Homeplug -> Apple Airport Express 2.4 & 5GHz WiFi (same SSID as Almond+)

So, my MacBook Pro might be connecting over Airport Express -> Homeplug -> Ethernet Almond+, or possibly direct to the Almond+. Very possibly a mixture of the two.

Hopefully this is useful in tracking down the problem!

@Evansj.

Honestly the setup you have will be close to impossible to troubleshoot.
Using the same SSID for 4 different networks that take different routes through the network you will never know what network is causing the issue.

I suggest you separate the networks during troubleshooting to Isolate the issue.

@eldaria good point. I've switched off the AirPort Express. The Almond+ range is great! Full signal 3 floors away from the router. Anyway, the backup failed again so it will be a good test.

I'm not really complaining as I love the Almond+ and I love seeing it develop, I'm just also mentioning how the Almond+ has integrated with my network.  Ours is an all-Apple network, with iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, iMacs, AppleTVs, etc.  Only one device connects with 802.11ac, and the rest with 802.11n.  2.4GHz is not an option for us, as our condo is saturated with 20+ other APs nearby.  So I've turned off the 2.4GHz on the Almond+, and use only 5GHz.  Almond+ is running in AP mode.

Once in a while I may have many problems web browsing, but tasks requiring prolonged throughput (regardless of bandwidth) are often problematic.  Such as downloads, VoIP and online gaming.

I know a fix is incoming as I have read through most of this thread.  I'll post back here with results when the next firmware is released too, in case it helps :)

I thought at first that it's a problem of Texas Instrument and searched the web for solutions. Frustrated, I then took the cable and it went without problems. There was no CRC error in the file. Then I tested my 5Ghz wifi (Fritz box) no error and then via wireless from Almond+ back with errors again. Hey guys,

I'm coming back to you after my initial problems.
Since the R066 it seems some of them got worse unfortunately.

Since the update it is simply impossible for me to get any package that's not corrupted from my NAS when I transferring data from the NAS to my computer or iPad, either in ethernet or in WiFi (both bands). When I use my former router, everything goes back to normal.
I ran some md5 checksum test on different type of files (around 4GB and another one of 100MB) and each time the files were corrupted.

What seems odd is that the data does not seem corrupted (I'm still testing that to be 100% sure), when I transfer it from the computer to the NAS or when it is downloaded from internet to my computer, using the almond+.

Any idea what's happening?

Edit: I just saw the "known issues from R66" post and it is saying: SAMBA doesn't work properly with OS X and Linux. I guess this is it? Any idea what means?

The Samba issue is only related to the built in Samba server in the Almond+.

This issue will be fixed in the next firmware update, so please just be patient, we have a solution in place.

Sorry Lars can you clarify of the Samba issue or the Wifi garbling issue will be fixed?

Thanks

They're not related and as this thread is about the data being garbled, that's what's being fixed in the new firmware.

Samba is only an issue on Mac and Linux IF you're using a drive connected to the Almond+ and it doesn't have anything to do with data corruption, it's just not possible to write to the attached drive.

Ok, so in that case I have data corruption when I access my data on a samba server (from my NAS) using an ethernet or a WiFi connection from the Almond+.

Yes, which is the issue this thread is about and as mentioned, we have a fix that we're testing and once that firmware is ready in beta, we'll make sure all of you get access to it.

Thanks Lars.

One quick question. Do you know if the data corruption occurs in both "direction"? It seems I got it only when copying from the NAS onto the computer, but not from the computer to the NAS, which is odd.

Not sure, I don't have the problem so I really can't say.

@Lars great to hear that it's fixed internally. I am looking forward to the beta.

Any ETA on when the beta firmware will be ready?
I'm seeing this issue as well, and it's manifested by.. corrupting my Time Machine backup :(

I don't have any other router, so I'd really like this fixed ASAP

Since R066, I've been getting corrupted downloads over wi-fi. Any kind of compressed file will inevitably contain CRC errors and be unusable, whether I download it on a PC, iPad or Android device.
Thus also affects Steam, Origin, GOG etc.
I'm running both a 5 GHz (11ACVHT80) and a 2.4 GHz (11NGHT40), both with WPA2PSK (PSK2+TKIP).

If I'm plugged directly into my own LAN I'm not seeing the problem. I hope there is some way we can clear this up, otherwise I'm going to have to shelve my Almond+ for the time being :/

I am seeing it too when using Time Machine backup and ssh connections. Also on R66. Going back to the slower AP :-(

This issue is for some reason only affecting less than 1% of our backers, so this is what's so strange.

Just wondering how you guys know about these numbers (affecting less than 1% of the backers), I've been experiencing this problem since I installed the router (1st of september), but I never thought about going onto the forum to check it.
I use the almond+ in AP mode, and just now stopped using the wan port. It doesn't make a difference though.
Running the loop suggested somewhere in this thread:
Code: [Select]
while true; do curl -s -o test.dmg http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flash/updates/11_5_1/mac/Adobe-Flash-Professional-CS55-Update.dmg ; md5 test.dmg ; sleep 1 ; done
causes every single download to have a different checksum.

Based on the number of complaints. Pretty much all of them are in this thread.
We're working on a fix and we're testing out a new beta firmware now. Once we're sure it doesn't cause any additional problems, we'll be releasing an update that fixes this issue as well as some other problems people are experiencing.

So you are saying you are letting less than 1% of your backers completely down with an unusable router that basically is at the moment no better than a paperweight? I would think that the number is pretty high because how many of the backers will run their routers in AP mode. Are you sure it would not affect everybody when running in AP mode?

Please give us an ETA for the firmware.

Thanks

We've solved the issue as mentioned, but we're still testing the firmware and range extender isn't working yet, as we upgraded the Wi-Fi drivers and that changed something which meant we ended up with more work to do. The next firmware release will fix this issue, the Apple connectivity issues and a lot more things and it's not a quick thing to make sure we don't introduce further issues and as such it'll be ready when it's ready I'm afraid.

Thank you Lars for the clarification. I understand that upgrading the Wi-Fi driver takes more time and needs thorough testing.

Again thanks for the clarification, looking forward to the update!

Best regards

Alex

Looking forward to a fix on this one. I am having the same issue with corrupted downloads. My Almonds are all in AP mode, getting corrupted downloads, images and very poor airplay performance for streaming video.

Just adding my voice to this problem. See it on:

Macbook Air 11 (2010) - downloads fail
Macbook Air 13 (2014) - downloads fail
iMac 5K - downloads fail
iPhone 6 - firmware updates always failed
iPad mini Retina - firmware updates always failed
iPad Air - firmware updates always failed

not many people complain doesn't means 1%,

I bet this issue probably effect everyone, some people just don't know,

this corrupt issue have such a wide effect render android play store auto update useless,
it's hardly have apk download without checksum error,

if you guys can easily reproduce this on your side, that means bunny happened.

No, it really doesn't affect everyone, if it did, I'd be having this issue at home, which I don't.
It might be 2% by now, but it's still a comparatively low number.

It's not something that we can easily reproduce, but we have a fix for it, but it won't be in the next firmware as it was apparently a little bit more complex than I was initially told, so it'll be in the next public beta firmware, but due to delays because of some bugs in R067, it too will be delayed.  :-\

Add me to the list. I just recently got a MacBook Pro, and I'm experiencing the corruption issues, both 2.4 and 5 GHz networks. I'm in AP mode.

I don't have a Windows wireless machine to compare to, (my Windows box is wired).

Sorry,

Has there been any update to this issue?  It appears that so many of my downloads are failing miserably.

I'm in AP mode, and the majority of my devices are macs and ios devices...

We're nearly there with the new firmware release. Our beta/dev guys should be getting a beta build to test next week and if that's all good, then we'll release it to everyone.

Is this fix in the 69 release? My wifi performance has degraded to the point of being unusable for any type of audio or video communications.
