Title: Homeplug
Post by: natsbar on April 12, 2015, 07:36:27 am
With homeplug AV2 starting to become a standard, I think it would be a great protocol to add to the next version of the almond. What can I say? I'm a bit of a homeplug fanboy.

Most likely not going to happen as it take sup a lot of space on the PCB and it will also add a lot of cost.

Can I make the assumption that you live in a new house with good wiring? I've tried some older homeplug products and the performance was in the single digit Mbps for me, now very convincing.

As for why I go homeplug, there are a couple of reasons. I rent and move a lot and usually live in small places so even if the electrical is bad, there signal doesn't usually have to go very far, so I get pretty good bandwidth. Also, as a renter, I usually don't want to invest the time in dragging Cat 5 cable around a place if the cable will move with me, so homeplug is very convenient.

The last thing is that over the past couple of years the speeds for homeplug have gotten a lot better. Doesn't really matter when you have bad wiring, but the way my place is set up, it helps my router a bit if I can get a few things off of wifi and on to something wired.

If your house is wired with ground in all you sockets, then go for HPAV2 MIMO version of the adapters. This technology (same idea as Wi-Fi MIMO) transmits the HPAV2 signals on both power/neutral and power/ground. This provides huge performance gains (5 times over classic HPAV is not unusual on poor links). I have a pair of HPAV2 MIMO adapters from D-Link, so can recommend them.

Fair enough, I just don't think it'll ever happen, at least not from us.

Lars, you are right that adding HPAV2 MIMO to the Almond+ it would blow-up your BOM costs.
Everybody needs Wi-Fi. Not everybody needs PLC. External HP adapters is the way to do.

I agree with Lars, (like other wanted features) it's not going to happen.
