Title: Wow, Costco is now carrying Almond+
Post by: gof on November 23, 2015, 11:08:53 pm
Just received a new "Online Only" flyer from Costco.  Almond+ with two power plugs for $199.99

Considering the Costco return policy (very generous) and their quality expectations, I'm honestly surprised.  The mobile app and software doesn't seem to be up to the same comparison levels as others in the category (network routers).  I wonder what will happen when a large percentage get returned?

That is surprising that they would carry this unsupported product.

I never saw what the A+ lightning deal was on Amazon last week, but I can already hear the other Backers and Pre-order buyers screaming . A year or 18 months out still no support and now selling in off the shelf at a better price/package.
ST V2 is $199 from BB, Amazon and Price matched from Sears ( with extra $50 in SYW credits)  with 4 sensors.

Costco sometimes buys end-of-life products from companies unloading stock.

And just as often they stock products new to the market or well established products.

Being the eternal optimist that I am (which explains me backing many Kickstarter projects with varying levels of success), I am hoping that more people using Almond+ will result in better development and hopefully quicker fixes to the product.

I am fairly happy with Almond+. Do I think it can be capable of so much more? Of course. Am I happy with the current speed of updates? Of course not. However, it meets my needs, the support is one of the best I have encountered and people seem to be genuinely interested in any issues I have. It's hard to ask for more than that.

Me too!

Though I have to admit, obmd1's post was the first thing that came to mind when I saw it was being offered at Costco, I am putting the positive vibes out there and hoping for the best.

The A+ isn't exactly holding me back but for sure I could leverage secondary control support, a release version of the Rules, improved firmware and an actual API.  I've been able to prototype most of what I want for a residence and that's really all I'm prepared to do with this hardware and absolutely believe that a touchscreen interface to a "combo router/HA device" is solid product offering. Maybe a different SoC would have worked better, pretty sure it would have, and being able to roll OpenWRT forward would have been nice but I'm ok with offloading some more complex stuff to another device like a Pi or legacy laptop and keep moving.
