Sigma has decided to release the interopability layer of the Z wave protocol to the public domain. http://www.techhive.com/article/3114232/home-tech/z-wave-part-of-it-at-least-becomes-an-open-smart-home-standard.html interesting to see if this sparks some new innovation.
