Title: Question regarding Almond+ USB Connectors
Post by: desnotes on August 15, 2014, 12:41:36 pm
First, I want to say this is not a rant or some immediate demand/expectation. I am happy with the Almond+ progress and look forward to the future enhancements?

Are there any specific goals on what the USB connections will do? I've heard interest in plugging in drives and also other versions of ZigBee products. What will their basic function be?

(Not asking for timeframe).

Thanks Lars and all others on the Securifi Team. Great Product!

Currently the USB 3.0 ports are only for storage.
Samba and FTP is working, although we still have some issues with Samba when it comes to OS X and possibly also Linux and we're working on fixing these.

Future options that we're working on adding down the road and that we promised was print server and USB 3G/4G dongle support, but this is going to take some time to add.
Beyond that, we haven't really planned that much, but technically third party dongles for other wireless technologies would be possible.

When is USB printing coming? Will it support airprint? I would love to be able to print via my iphone / ipad to my non-Ethernet equipped USB printer!
also being able to plug in my phone to the USB port if the internet is out and have it utilize my cell connection would be great.

I can confirm that you can also get the USB ports to work with FTDI serial to USB adapters.

Can the USB ports just be used for power, for USB devices?  I'm away from my router for a few days, so can't check, but am curious.

Sure, they're standard USB 3.0 ports and can deliver up to 900mA.

Not sure to be honest. We never promised for support for phones to be used this way, but it might be a possibility.
