Title: Laptop connects but can't do anything
Post by: jasonl99 on August 21, 2014, 01:54:45 pm
I can connect (but it takes 10-15 seconds).  But I can't even ping the Almond+ (which I am using as an access point).  I am able to connect with a phone (Moto X) and a different laptop.  Both connect quickly.  The laptop having the issue is a Lenovo T540p with an Intel 7260 wifi card.

The log looks funny.  I really don't know what it means, but here it is.

What wifi security are you using? It looks like you're trying to use WPA Enterprise.
Others have posted in the forum about not being able to get the radius server connection working.

Thanks for the suggestion...I am just using regular WPA2.  The fact that I can connect with a different laptop and a phone is really wierd.  And that laptop that *can't* connect connects just fine with the access point that the Almond+ will (hopefully, eventually) replace.

I'd say to delete the wireless profile from that laptop and try to reconnect. From what I can tell by looking at the logs, the laptop is trying to connect with WPA enterprise security(username and password), not the standard PSK (password)
If you're using Windows 8, you'll have to jump through some hoops, as they've stripped out features that were in Windows 7: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/ac80d8ec-21ad-4d44-9a0c-c8777f861db7/windows-8-manage-wireless-networks

I have tried about everything.  The 2.4 ghz channel connects fine (and yes, the 7260 is an ac-capable adapter).

I've verified that the network is WPA/WPA2 Personal.  The Almond+ is set to WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK Mixed Mode (the same as it is with 2.4 ghz).

I guess I'll just have to wait and hope that it gets fixed, but it's disappointing that I can't use it.

The log below shows what happens when I "connect" to 5ghz band (WLAN00) and immediately connect to the 2.4hgz band (WLAN10).  The RADIUS entry is also in the 2.4ghz connection, so that must happen whether it's enterprise or not.   I can't imagine why one band would work but the other not.

Aha!  I switched wireless mode from 11ACVHT80  to  11ACVHT40Plus and now it works!  I have no idea what this means  ;D

Thank you.

Interesting that I can connect but have no data transmitted using 80 MHz bandwidth, but it works fine with 40.  I'll have to keep checking it as new firmware is released.

That looks like a driver bug on our side potentially, I'll have the software team look into it.
What kind of link speeds are you seeing on 40MHz channel width? Does the card negotiate connections at 866Mbps?

I realise this doesn't necessarily help the OP, but my laptop with Intel 7260AC (2x2:2) card connects and operates just fine on 11ACVHT80, with the full 866Mbps rate. My phone also links at 433Mbps so 80MHz is definitely working here.

Perhaps try updating the Intel wifi drivers? Or even try installing an older set if you're on the very latest.

Hmm, he might have one of the non AC 7260's as they do two N versions as well...

That still wouldn't explain the lack of traffic with 80MHz enabled though..

I've got a few 802.11n devices (iPad, 2x iPhones, Macbook Air, Wireless bridge device, Nexus 4, Nexus 7) that are 802.11n working just fine on 5GHz with 80MHz channels enabled.

I don't have a non-AC 7260 (thanks Intel for your naming scheme making things to simple to understand...) available to try though, only the AC variant, which seems to work without issue for me.

Intel cards and drivers tend to be pretty good in my experience so even if it is the non-AC variant, I'd be surprised if there was a problem directly with the card or drivers themselves.

What's weird is, I definitely have no RADIUS/802.1X enabled on my Almond+ - they are both set to just WPA2-AES PSK, I'm still getting an occasional entry mentioning RADIUS during a client association. It appears to only happen at random, definitely not every single client connection, and the clients that have had the entry appear during association have worked fine for me. They also don't get the message every time they associate, just occasionally.

Most odd. Thankfully causing no problems for me. It's quite funny getting 45MB/sec over wireless too ;)
