Title: Openwrt and USB Tethering
Post by: kiucheng on August 24, 2014, 05:43:43 am
I have a ZTE MF821D which is a hostless modem. According to Openwrt it can be setup as USB Tethering for WAN access. http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/usb.tethering

I am going to give it a try but would like to know which platform is Almond+ so that I can get the okpg package from the correct repository. Or a link to the repository woud be appreciated. Thanks

All the OPKG's supported are included in the firmware I'm afraid. We're going to release the source code, but it hasn't been done yet.

Thanks. Any plan to support hostless usb modem in the future?

I know we're going to support USB modems, but I'm not familiar with the terminology you're using, so I'm not sure what the difference is.

http://ofmodemsandmen.com/hostless.html

It basically simulates itself as generic usb to ethernet device so it doesn't need a specific driver. Exactly the same as usb tethering on Android phones work.
Since there is already a solution available for Openwrt, I assume it would not be a big issue to implement in Almond+

Oh, interesting, wasn't aware of those.
Apparently 3G/4G support isn't quite as simple as the software team had hoped for, but it's something we should hopefully have in place before the end of the year.
I know this isn't really the answer you were hoping for, but it's the best I can offer right now  :-\

I'd also like the ability to plug in a USB 3G/4G LTE modem and have the router connect through it when the primary ISP is down, if that's possible.

It should be possible to do what's known as "fail over" once we have support for 3G/4G modems. This does exactly what you're asking for.

Is there a roadmap that we can view? and hopefully vote for?

Afraid not.

gentle ping

I can't get kmod-usb-net-cdc-ether to work from the unofficial repos:(

This is very much needed for backup internet from many usb 4G/3G sticks and from phones.

Thanks

Check the software development forum, someone made an unofficial repo.

tried the unofficial repo... but unfortunately the kmod-usb-net-rndis  kernel panics... I just spent 2 hours wiring up a serial connection to try to recover, eventually succeeding... any chance you could add the modules of http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/usb.tethering for the next version?
