Title: Parental Control
Post by: coolcatiger on November 05, 2014, 10:27:57 am
Any plans to add parental controls ?
Advanced parental control is nice but to start ability to see connected device on ios app and disable connection from the app would be very nice and desirable.

Yes, but by the looks of things, it's unlikely that we'll have anything until early next year now.

Feature request, a separate SSID that can be parental control enabled,  that you can utilize OpenDNS to block adult sites for that SSID and internet schedual.  Then a fully open unrestricted SSID for the adults in the house.

That's actually a really good idea. I'll make sure it gets passed on to the software team.

OMG, I just discovered OpenDNS.
This makes a serious difference in speed compared to my ISP's DNS!!  Thanks! :D

Thank you! it's one feature that no other router has, and is perfect for the average home with kids. my current solution is using two wireless routers. it works, but would be nice to just have the one device.

While an interesting concept (that I DO like and would love to see something like this implemented), how do you handle "shared" devices such as printers, networks storage, etc.  With devices essentially being on two separate networks this would be a challenge.

A better scheme might be to have, by MAC, the assignment of DNS and filters.  Same benefit of having two separate SSID's configured differently, but keeping everything on the same subnet for device utilization.

Two seperate SSID's, but same subnet for printers and other stuff on the local LAN like apple TV's, for streaming or anything else that a person would have. the DNS woudl be the only change for the "Enable Parental Settings" check box that will then give the user an option to filter DNS, specific sites not allowed to go to, and internet access schedule. like for kids, you want them off the internet at 9pm Sunday - Thursday, but weekend until 11pm..
you get the idea.. no internet, but local resources like TV streaming or printing would still be accessible on the same local LAN.
Really hoping for this to be a real thing that gets implemented. For people with kids, they know this would be just one less thing to worry about when it comes to bedtime.

Hi...relative newbie to router configuration here. I would love to try opendns but I was wondering if changing will affect the current settings I have for things like network printers, port forwards,  etc.. I would like to use it for the parental controls mostly (unless Securifi is close to implementation) . Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

changing DNS would not effect much on the inside home network. just surfing on the internet.
