Title: SSID question
Post by: Bell96 on January 20, 2015, 04:30:57 pm
Just set up my new Almond Plus as a range extender. Why is it recommended to use a different SSID? I have a lot of devices at home and thought if I kept it the same it would just roll over if there was a problem.

Thanks.

PS: how do I get on a notification list for updates?

I haven't tried to use the range extender mode, so I'm not sure if there's a specific reason why. Here's my experience with wired AP's on the same SSID:
I've set up multiple (WIRED) AP's before on the same name. Make sure you broadcast the secondary network on a different channel than the other network. (Use 1,6,or11 only as a best practice, as they're the only channels that don't overlap.)

It's recommended simply because not all routers play nice with each other. You can of course use it on the same SSID, but Wi-Fi doesn't have the best handover handling either when it comes to roaming between access points. There's nothing technically wrong with using the same SSID, I do at home, but I don't have a mixed router environment any more so...
