Title: Remote Access to Web UI
Post by: mparadis on January 22, 2015, 12:01:20 pm
Is there a way to set up remote Access to the Web UI, for editing rules etc, when away from home? I have no problem setting up port forwarding and I have a DDNS service set up already for use with other devices but I haven't seen this anywhere and am afraid to screw something up. Thanks!

Edit: I am sure that a VPN could be setup to do this if I understand VPN's like I think I do BUT I have never used / set one up so I am not familiar with them. I just thought since there is already a webserver that if I could access it via port forwarding it would be much simpler for me.

You can set up the management UI to be available to external access through the LCD, or you can set up a VPN and connect to that then edit your settings.

I would be scared to death of allowing WAN access to the web UI, and more so of exposing it to the internet.

However, I have set up the VPN and can access it from my phone, and it works just fine.  That is my current remote access as I don't want to use the cloud.

I just set up a VPN server (IPsec Server with pre-shared key) on the A+, and a "Basic VPN" on my Android phone (under "More networks -> VPN -> Basic VPN), type L2T/IPSec PSK, and then put in the pre-shared key.

Good luck!

Warning:
1) While the router pages require login there is a status page for sensors that does not require login. So someone (if they know your domain name or IP) could check.
2) Security concerns may also exist regarding controlling those objects... But I need a test subject/Guinea pig to try it out on...

Sounds a VPN it is. Anyone know an article or resource with a basic beginners guide to setting up / using a VPN? Thanks!

There's a non-functioning VPN built into the router right now. The easiest VPN to set up would be (I think) OpenVPN. https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/wiki/Easy_Windows_Guide
If you have a Synology NAS, they have an excellent, super easy VPN server that can be installed. It can even function as an OpenVPN server.
Whatever VPN you choose, avoid PPTP. It's not secure. OpenVPN and IPSEC/L2TP are the way to go.

I believe only the VPN client mode is not working.  As a server it is working just fine for me.  I don't stress it much (just the occasional log in to check that it works, or to turn the thermostat on/off), but I haven't had any problems with it at all.
Title: Port Fowarding the Almond+ itself

So i have my Almond+ set up in AP mode wired to a Asus RT-AS68U router.

I want to be able to access the webUI of the Almond+...what port do i need to forward for that?

@ ChazBolt,

You would like to access the Web UI from your local network or outside the network? Port forwarding is needed only when you would like to access it from outside and from inside the network use the IP address listed under status icon.

I also want to do this. Port forwarding the WebUI.

Im running the A+ in AP mode. Any hints as to what the WebUI port is so i can forward it?

Go to Settings-->WAN Access-->Web Access (Port 80)-->Enable and then try to access it using the WAN IP address from a remote location.

If it is still not working then you need to forward port 80 on your main router for the Almond+ IP address.

isnt port 80 used for HTML?

can i reassign the port for the A+ WebUI and then forward that?

We assigned the port 80 for accessing the Web UI remotely, and for now there is no option to change it on the Nut OS.

@ ChazBolt,

I just rechecked and it is working fine at my side. Could you please try rebooting the Almond+ once and then check.
