Title: Anoyone tried Monoprice z-wave lock
Post by: Quikster on February 18, 2015, 02:30:02 pm
Has anyone tried the z-wave lock monoprice is selling now with the Almond+? http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=122&cp_id=12212&cs_id=1221201&p_id=10798&seq=1&format=2

Looks like a nice lock and the reviews with working with Verde controllers seem to be positive.

Looks like it may be an unbranded Vision ZM-1701 (http://www.reddit.com/r/homeautomation/comments/2sg1vs/deal_monoprice_zwave_electronic_deadbolt_95/) which should be supported and verified by Securifi (http://wiki.securifi.com/index.php?title=List_of_compatible_sensors_-_Almond%2B_2014)

Yes, that's from Vision.

My personal opinion is that it's a bit plasticy, but then again, the established lock guys aren't much better.

They have been selling it for awhile, I've had mine for almost 8 months, and have not had any issues. Having said that, we don't use the zwave function very often, mostly just to program unlock codes. I haven't tried it with any rules yet.

Gotcha, guess i haven't looked at their home automation stuff in a while, or maybe it was more expensive when it first came out. I think I'll try it out and see how well it works. They've always had great customer service so if it doesn't work I'm sure I can return it or get it replaced.

They went down $22 since I bought mine, but it was still a great deal compared to the alternatives. Everything else I've seen that is remote controllable is at least $199, most are $299. It just works.

If you do get one, the wire that connects the outside panel to the inside controller can be confusing, at least it was for me. I couldn't find where to plug it in, support straightened me out though. After seeing it, it should be obvious where it is, I just completely missed it.

Thanks, I did order one and it should show up today. I have read that I should closely inspect it before installing it for that exact reason. Others have stated that when its on the door seeing where it plugs in can be difficult, but its cake if you do it ahead of time to know where it will need to go.

What threw me is that there is a *very* obvious 6 (or 8?) pin connector on the face of the board, that looks like it should be the one, except that the cable has a 3 (4?) pin plug on it. The manual does not show exactly where to plug it in, but the real connector is actually on the inside *edge* of the board at the top, if I remember correctly. It literally took me almost a week to find it with help from support.

So I was able to get it installed and working pretty easily. The place where you need to plug in the wire is actually on top and I can definitely see why its so hard to find. it is not  the best placement at all and the directions do not even mention or show where it is.

Installed and working well.  Pairing was quick and easy.  First code set via LCD UI and next 3 were at via Android app.

Makes me want to order another before the sale ends, but I should probably test for a while first.

sale ended :-(. may I ask how the tumbler is for this? I went with a kwikset because it was an established company (and the smart key tech lets me rekey it myself in minutes if I want to)

I intentionally didn't buy a Kwikset I was looking into at first due to the vulnerability of SmartKey re-keying:
http://www.wired.com/2013/08/kwikset-smarkey-lock-vulns/
http://www.cnet.com/news/can-you-really-crack-the-kwikset-kevo/

I like the idea of the smartkey, but the current implementation isn't perfect. As they point out in the second video though its only marginal protection anyway as my door is wood and my backdoor has a glass window that can be broken even easier.

My door is almost all glass (glass french doors) so if someone really wants in, they are getting in. But then they meet my doesn't-like-strangers 110 lb German shepherd :-D and if my roommate or I are home we have other means to deal with intruders.
