Title: Random Restarts of Almond+
Post by: d.kiran on October 15, 2016, 12:21:04 am
Over the past 2-3 days, I have seen random restarts of the Router. I have a script that runs at start up to show when my almond restarted. I think it is pretty self explanatory. If you see July, it is because the NTP server has not loaded and the time has not synced before my startup script had run.

I had 6 restarts just today. Only one of them where I had turned off the router and started it up. 5 of them were Almond+ restarting itself.

Three more restarts  today when nobody was home all day. This affects both wired and wireless network. When I lose connectivity, I connect to my router wireless network and that works perfectly fine.

I have sent the logs, but I am not sure if there are any logs or if there is any way to recognize why the router is restarting itself.

In which mode are you  using the Almond+? and try to disable any rule which you have created for rebooting the Almond+ and then check the status.

Hi Ashok,

I have disabled all the rules and it hasnt restarted for two days.

1. Is this a known issue ?

2. Is there a limit on the number of rules and devices before Almond starts to reboot ?

One of the rule might be triggering the continuous reboot and we don't have any known issues or the limit of number of rules creation. Go ahead and hit send logs now, to see, if we could get any useful information and proceed accordingly.

Thanks.. I sent logs again with d.kiran in them.

Apparently this did not resolve my problems. Turning off rules reduced my restarts from 5-6 / day to about 2-3 / day. This is still unacceptable.

Are these the logs that are important to troubleshoot? I am planning to back these up to a USB drive every 30 seconds so that we would have some idea what happens before the restart.

Please let me know if I am missing any log files that you will need so that I can add them to my script.

Ashok,

Here are the logs that I have about 10-15 seconds before the server restarted. Can you see if you can find anything here ?

If there are other logs I need to capture, let me know.

Yet another restart since my last post. Updated log files here with Openwrt system and kernel log as well.

I have noticed that this usually happens when my wife is watching netflix/sling and I am working. Both the devices are connected over ethernet .

This is frustrating me. I work from home and my voip calls and my webex sessions keep getting disconnected.

@ d.kiran,

We could completely understand your situation, our team is working on it as we speak. Anything changed recently related to the setup or rules or adding new sensors?

Hi Ashok,

No changes at all.

@Ashok,

Any update or do you need any additional files ?

Two restarts in 12 hours. Updated log files.

@ d.kiran,

We are trying to replicate the same settings on one of our Almond+ and leave it for some time to see, how it is reacting.  Will try to get back by tomorrow.

Here's yet another update with possibly some clues ?

There was a thread yesterday about kwikset locks. I have three z-wave kwikset locks. They were working fine, but I realized I had not used them via the app for a while. So I tested them out, and turns out none of the three locks worked.

I had added the third lock about a week before the problems started happening. I don't why there would be a week difference before I started seeing the restarts.

So I removed the locks and added them. The first two added successfully, the third one however, now was not getting added. I tried about 4 times. I also took a video to show how long it took and even after the lock was detected and supposed to be added. It did not get added.

Here's the video, I don't know how to turn off the audio, so please ignore the audio.

Since my almond was away from my modem, I could not send the logs directly, but my script took a backup of the log files, so hopefully that should help. I have three attachments here, all taken around same time, so there might be duplicates.

I would appreciate any help from you guys on this.

I know this is kind like cutting off your nose to spite your face, but since I got a separate wireless router and removed all WiFi functions from my Almond+ I haven't had any random restarts.

I am almost at that point. I like Securifi and they have been very helpful in the past. I hope this information will help them resolve the issue. That would help the product itself.

Big picture, If they don't have a decent router (that doesn't restart multiple times every day), or a HA platform that is mature (Securifi still has a ways to go), I don't know how they can be successful. I am happy to help them make the product better if they are interested, but at some point, I am going to have to give up.

Right now, I have a separate router for my work laptop because this affected my work a lot.

P.S. Three restarts today

@ d.kiran,

I am sorry for the inconvenience caused and really wish, we had a solution for this there is no issues with the similar kind of setup at our end. But, we are still working on it and will get back as soon as I get an update.

I do miss the presence detection, but I don't miss the terrible WiFi. Worth the trade off. I suspect it is heat related, as even without WiFi my Almond+ runs warmer than seems reasonable.

I think that is a reasonable guess. Mine is warmer than what it used to. I just searched to see if there was a market solution for this and came across this gem -

http://gizmodo.com/5795497/you-better-buy-this-router-cooler-because-your-router-might-be-on-fire-right-now

I guess this provides some much needed levity.

I took my smartthings water sensor which has a temperature sensor as well. It currently shows at 105. I will try to see if it becomes hotter just before restart. I just moved it from Kitchen sink and put it on top of the router.

Just a quick update from my side. My Almond wireless router starting acting up again. Restarting 6 times in the middle of a netflix movie.

At this point, I have disabled the both the Wifi radios and using it as a wired router and purchased an AC-RT68U. I just realized that the Wifi Almond+ has never been even remotely as fast as the Asus even on its best days.

As you know, I am highly supportive of the work Securifi is doing, but the wifi in Almond+ is surprisingly bad and I just did not realize this. As a wired router, it is performing ok.

However, what is surprising is that, my gigabit ethernet is kinda slow to respond when compared to the wifi even when the wifi router is actually connected in AP mode to Almond+.

This tells me that something is seriously wrong with the network stack on the Almond+especially around DNS resolutions.
