Monoprice motion sensor - can't add or remove?
« on: November 08, 2014, 05:37:19 pm »
I'm having no end of difficulty with this thing. It was paired, but only detected motion (rarely), but not temperature, even though it is supposed to do temperature as well. I was hoping that the new firmware would maybe have better support, so I removed the sensor from the router GUI, and then tried to re-add it. Unfortunately I then realized that the battery was dead, so it was removed from the router but not the device itself. I replaced the battery, but now I cannot add or remove the sensor, any thoughts?

Well, first of all I think you removed it wrong, as I presume you did it in Connected Home, tap on sensor, edit, remove, but maybe I'm mistaken.
Z-Wave sensors have to be removed under Add Sensor, Remove, then you need to do the pairing sequence on the sensor.
In this case, look at the back of the motion sensor, there's a tiny hole, press the button quickly inside it with the Almond+ stylus and it should remove once the Almond+ is in Remove mode.
You can now go ahead and add it again.

I did remove it as you describe, the problem is that the battery was dead when I did the remove on the Almond+. I've tried the method you mentioned as well, and it doesn't seem to do anything. On the Almond in either Remove or Add mode, pressing the button on the sensor does nothing.

You're pushing the tiny button inside the hole on the rear of the sensor, right? Not the tamper switch?
You need to be in remove mode first, then tap the button in the hole, not press and hold.

Yes, the button on the rear of the sensor. I'll try it again. Should the cover be on or off (i.e. tamper switch closed or open)?

Not sure it matters, but try with it on.

After much trial and error, I figured it out. You need to open the sensor, remove the battery, put the battery back in, wait until the red light comes on, close the sensor, wait until the light goes off, go to Add Sensor, remove, then push the button quickly (don't hold it in), then the Almond+ will show the sensor removed message, and the red light will start blinking on the sensor. Then I selected add, pushed the button quickly again, it added it, set it to Motion Detector, and it found it, and now displays the temperature as well, which is what I was trying to accomplish the whole time. Thanks Lars, once again!

Wow, what a mess.
We're still working on improving the support for these sensors, so hopefully they'll be working a bit smoother soon.

I don't think it's really anything to do with the Almond+ per se, just that the documentation with the device is a bit lacking in that regard. Regardless, looking forward to more 'smootheness'!

Thanks
Tom

So do we know if these are working now or not?

I am cautiously optimistic. With the last firmware update temperature became visible after the remove and re-add, and the motion detection does seem to work, so I'll say yes, they work.

I bought one of these after seeing this discussion. I upgraded to R069 when it came out, and my sensor paired successfully right away when I tried tonight. Temperature appeared right away. It took a couple minutes to register motion, but that is common with PIR motion sensors because they need time to adjust to background levels before working properly.
