Almond+ getting pretty hot
« on: July 18, 2014, 12:34:01 am »
Just received and set up my backer unit.
Aweome product so far. Thanks securifi!
I am recognizing that the unit is getting pretty hot though. Is that anticipated? The back is getting much much hotter than any previous router I have ever had.
Anybody else noticed this?
Thanks.
Flo

That is normal, keep in mind that this is an 802.11ac router which has six power amplifiers that when it full use can produce up 18W of power. That said, that would be peak power and it a figure that can't be reached in regular usage scenarios, only during our internal tests. Even so, it gets quite warm, but this is why we have a heat pipe cooler inside it, much as what you find in notebooks. We didn't want to add a fan, as it's a failure point and it adds extra noise. The compact size of the Almond+ does mean that it runs warmer as well, but we've tested the Almond+ in ambient temperatures of 50 degrees C (122 degrees F) and in up to 90% relative humidity (non condensing) and we weren't seeing any problems so it's highly unlikely there will be any issues due to heat unless you put it in a metal shed in a desert.
