Terrible throughput with my new gigabit fiber
« on: November 16, 2016, 05:47:21 pm »
I was all set to enjoy the gigabit fiber that was just installed in my house, but to my great surprise discovered that the Almond+ seems to be a huge bottleneck.

It has the latest (R089) firmware, but I can only get at most 70 Mbps through it download, and a miserable 4 Mbps upload. That's with just one computer connected to the LAN. If I also connect my main switch (which is 100 Mbps), these numbers drop to roughly half! The switch feeds a few smaller 100 Mbit switches, but traffic on the network is very light.

The Mac's Network Utility verifies that I do have a gigabit physical link from my computer to the router, and the fiber technician verified by connecting his computer directly to the WAN that it is delivering more than 600 Mbps in both directions (limited by the speed of his computer, apparently).

This is unacceptable! The specs say that all of the Almond+'s ports are gigabit. But the throughput is terribly lacking.

Indeed, Almond+ does have Gigabit ports, are you facing this issue with all the LAN ports and which mode are you using the Almond+?

I don't know if it affects all LAN ports. The situation seems to be fluid. Another speed test just now showed 31 Mbps down. Then I immediately ran it again and got 107 Mbps down. Both, however, showed a miserable upload speed of ~1.5 Mbps.

I suppose it's possible that the Mac is somehow limiting upload speed but I don't see how it could slow it down that much.

Almond+ is in router mode.

Was just poking around the router's log. There are lots of messages like this. What do they mean? (the router's LAN address is 10.0.0.250)

Just did another speed test, and the results were dramatically different: 63 Mbps down, and 418 Mbps(!) up. I haven't changed anything; did Securifi reprogram my Almond+ remotely or something?

The download speed, while better, is nowhere near what the fiber is capable of. As for upload, I can live with that :-)

I have ATT Gigapower. I used to get 1GB, but I downgraded to 300 Mbps and I get pretty close to what I pay for.

So at least, you should get what I get.

The first time, I got slower results as well. Turns out I was using a old Cat5 cable. I assume you have a CAT5E cable from Modem to A+ and a cat5E cable from A+ to your Mac .
