Newbie question : wifi access agreement screen
« on: October 28, 2014, 07:00:21 pm »
Hi,

I have asked this question a looong time ago in the Kickstarter comments but forums are probably better for keeping track of answers etc...

I use the Almond+ in a restaurant and we let customers use the WiFi for free. In other places like McDonalds or Starbucks or hospitals they often have no WiFi password setup but a login screen instead with an agreement form people can just read, click "I agree" submit and then they can surf freely and all they want. (no need for any other feature like payment to connect or x hours sessions that automatically cut people off, just a pop up screen with info and the checkbox + button)

Would that be possible to set up with the Almond+ ?

On Kickstarter some people told me that it could be done by someone with access to the SDK.. But I'm not at all familiar with what that is and how it works.

I realize that there are way more urgent matters that needs to be added to the Almond+ right now, so I'm just checking for the future.

This is usually done via a third party service, I know DD-WRT includes some of those as part of their standard package, but it's not something that's supported on the Almond+ at the moment I'm afraid.

Ok thanks, I'll see if I find something. It's not a big problem not to have it either, I was just curious mostly.

The feature you are looking for is called "captive portal".
There are a bunch of plugins available for openwrt
http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/wireless.overview#captive.portal.software.available.in.the.openwrt.repository
but not sure if any of those would work on the almond+ out of the box

Cool, I can finally put a name on it  ;)

Thanks for the link. I've looked at it but I wouldn't really know what to try anyway until somebody writes a tutorial for dummies.

It's not something I would find essential anyway, but I still wanted to ask about it, so thanks for your information  :)
