port forwarding

I have seen some old reports that port forwarding needs to be enabled in the OpenWRT screen even if I define rules in the "Forwarding" tile.
Is this still the case? and if so, can someone describe precisely what 'enable" means? there is no single "enable" button so I suspect that some custom zone/forwarding needs to be
defined ?

I appreciate any help/suggestions.

When I forward ports through "Advanced" (on the home screen), then the "Forwarding" option in the router, the ports are indeed forwarded.  A way to check is to go to OpenWRT, "Network", "Firewall", then "Port Forwards", .....the ports should be there also as forwarded.  As an additional option you can also forward ports, edit ports already forwarded, delete forwarded ports, etc., in OpenWRT, Network, Firewall, then Port Forwards section.  I hope this answers your question.

thanks Rob. I do have the forwarding entries added. And can see them through the OpenWRT->Firewall -> Forwards screen.
My question has to do with two past facts: (i) When I tried with release 70 or so, forwarding didn't work for me and (ii) I have seen tickets/reports explicitly stating that "port forwarding needs to be enabled". So I was checking if there is something I need to do on top of adding the forwarding entries/rules.

I don't believe that there are any more steps that you are required to take for port forwarding.  I will assume that the forwarded ports are doing what needs to be done for you.  There is no radio button or box to check that I see anywhere in the app that states, "port forwarding needs to be enabled", so you should be good to go.

External Port

The following explanations are just topical ones without getting into a lot of TechnoSpeak. :)

External Port - A port that is outside of your network/router firewall, normally a public port.
Internal IP address - The IP address that is internal to your network assigned by your router to a device, the public cannot see it.
Internal Port - The opposite of an external port.  It is inside your network, and closed off to the public.
