Complete HA Noob.. not sure what im looking for in devices...
« on: November 25, 2016, 02:34:33 pm »
Im just getting started with the HA stuff... I have no sensors, and just recently bought a hue startup kit...
Got that up and running... but the lack of a physical switch motivated me to look for options on that... (probably go with the Securifi Clicks.)

Kinda wish there was a starter kit for those who already have an Almond that supports HA....for sensors..
Picking up some Click buttons, but the rest im not sure what im doing.
Should I go with Zigbee or Zwave or .... whats the pros and cons of either route..

That said.. Any opinions on the Almond Door/Window Sensor .....
Not sure what im looking for in these devices.... commands supported, features, Im really a noob at this...
I had X10 stuff but only played with the plug in modules not the switches/sensors....

Also I have a metal doorframe so im slightly worried about mounting the door sensor/how it fits on the frame/gap....

Most door/window sensors are pretty basic.
Almost all can mount using double sided tape or screws.
Some can also report temperature.
Some can have a second external switch to extend the sensor. Useful if you have 2 windows near each other.

Securifi, Linear, and Visonic have worked for me.

The smartthings multi sensor works as a door/window sensor and reports temperature. I can't get it to do open/close as well vibration as tilt. But on sale for$30 is a very good deal.

As for z-wave vs zigbee it depends upon which almond you have. If you have the Almond+ which supports both then I don't think it really matter which you get. I have both on the same setup and they play nice with each other via the rules and scenes.

I actually ended up getting the pack since I waited untill the last minute and the pack was still 100$ off (USD)
So now I have 2 door/multi sensors, one outlet, and a motion sensor....

And 2 sets of click buttons when they ship =)

The Linear WADWAZ-1 has the external sensor connection.
For me the Visonic MCT-340 SMA has reliably had the temperature.
