Almond+ and Nest thermostat -- connected but can't control Nest
« on: January 22, 2017, 09:23:05 pm »
I'm using an Almond+ in repeater mode, R090 firmware.  It recognized the Nest as soon as I installed it.  But it seems to only recognize it as a device in the same way it does an iPhone or laptop.  It doesn't appear as a smart device, like my Schlage lock does.  So, I can't control it or use it for rules or scenes.  What's up with that?  Please don't tell me it won't work with my Almond+ in repeater mode -- I can't use it as my router  because the darn thing needed to be moved much closer to my front door to run the Schlage lock.

@ Hallen,

Please login to the Almond+ Web UI-->Devices-->Add Nest Device, proceed with onscreen instructions. This would make the Nest devices to be added in our HA list and gives the ability to use them in Rules and Scenes.

You have only connected it to the internet like an iPhone or laptop, you need to follow Ashok's instructions to actually add the Nest to your device. The Webui is accessed by its internal IP address and username / password (all available on your webui if you don't remember / haven't changed them). Then you will see a screen for Devices, click that and then add Nest. Once you have successfully completed that make sure you hard refresh your browser so it will update the cache.

Please don't tell me it won't work with my Almond+ in repeater mode -- I can't use it as my router  because the darn thing needed to be moved much closer to my front door to run the Schlage lock.

If the Schlage is the only device you have I have a few recommendations if you'd like to use the A+ as a router at your farther router location. First, how far is it from the Schlage to the Router spot? It should work at a decent distance. However, if it is too far from the range you can add devices (cheap mains, not battery, powered ones) that repeat the signal of the Schlage. I would recommend that if you try that get some "wall-wart" style power outlets. I am not familiar if your Schlage is Z-wave or Zigbee but whichever it is make sure the devices you get are the same. For example if the Schlage is Z Wave, get Z Wave devices.

Worked perfectly -- thanks!  Now my next question.  Ever since I changed the Almond+ to be a repeater, it no longer reliably recognizes the devices using the network.  Even if I force devices to connect to the Almond+ rather than the main router  -- and I confirm I've done that and they're working just fine -- it doesn't always "see" them.

Obviously another problem I can solve by making the Almond+ my router instead using the idea above to get the signal to my Schlage, but other than that, what's the solution?

P.S.  Is there a way to give "thanks" to you guys, since I see the category under people's names?

This is because as a repeater the Almond+ doesn't actually handle the DHCP server and thus won't reliably show the devices. That being said mine works pretty consistently in that setup. Another option would be to run an ethernet cable to it and set it up as your router or a double NAT router. Or as mentioned before return it to its prior location and use a few home automation devices to repeat that signal for the Schlage.

I might just have to try the Schlage trick and make it the router again, then -- fingers crossed!
