Newb question setting up Almond+ / wifi
« on: November 15, 2014, 06:36:10 am »
OK. So I have just finally gotten to setting up my Kickstarter Almond plus.  I power it up and network cable connect it to my router - OK. It said it's ONline and I follow the instructions to link it to a secufifi account online - so I know it works.

Before I do anything else I decide to do an firmware update  - it check and said it is up to date [AP@-R064-L009-ZW015-ZB005].. I kind of don't believe it so I go to the website and see a newer firmware is available.  It has local install instructions to download and go to 10.10.10.254.  This is until now my Macbookair has been on my ADSL routers wifi and I use a 192.168.1.X IP rang off of that so entering the IP does nothing. I figure that obvious so I need to connect to the router - now I only have a laptop with wifi - not ethernet so WIFI it is.

So .. I see no new wifi networks, tablet and two phones see nothing either. Hrm.
I go into the Wifi Settings and see 2.4, 5 and Guest settings.  for the 2.4 and 5GHz the SSID is shown as 0 and password as 0. If I click on the entry box I can tap in a new SSID or Password .. I do so. I hit done and it prompts me to wait while it saves - then I get taken back to the wireless screen and the entry is shown as 0 still.
I have tried repeating setting these up and it is always the same .. I have powered cycled and it is no different. I have tried setting the security WPA etc on the wifi then setting the SSID/password and nope still shows 0??

the guest network seems to show a default username / password - but is disabled ... if I 'enable guest network'  - guess what the SSID and password become editable but are set to 0 and 0.

Am I missing somthing here???
I have also tried going to Internet settings and changing to manual IP and setting the IP to a 192.168.1.X number (non colliding) and gateway to the router - I have then tried to browse to the new IP .. but nothing happens.  My guess is the 'internet' side of things can't (and shouldn't) access the web interface.

So what should I do here?  I have trawled the forum and see no one else with this issue.

Please try a hardware reset http://wiki.securifi.com/index.php?title=Hardware_reset_button_-_Almond%2B_2014. The Wi-Fi SSID and Password should not be showing "0". Post reset try to access the WEB UI locally and update the firmware. This should help.

I am having exactly the same problem.  Just opened my Kickstarter edition that I received back in November.  Firmware is R064; says it's up to date (!); cannot get my mac to connect to the Almond+'s built-in web interface.

Currently this unit is just a paper weight....

How do I bring it up to a recent (stable) firmware code if:
a) the unit claims it's already up to date (which it isn't), and
b) the unit is not accessible locally via its web interface?

Really steamed at this point... appreciate any help you can offer.

First, do a hard reset - http://wiki.securifi.com/index.php?title=Hardware_reset_button_-_Almond%2B_2014
Then follow these steps to update the firmware - http://wiki.securifi.com/index.php?title=How_to_upgrade_the_Firmware_-_Almond%2B_2014
You can download the latest beta firmware (recommended) here - http://forum.securifi.com/index.php/topic,2447.0.html

Future firmware updates will be possible via the LCD UI.

Apologies for the hassle, it's a bug that affected a few units, but it's easy enough to fix.

Thanks for the quick reply.

a) I did a hard reset as requested.
b) When I tried connecting to 10.10.10.254 via a local browser, the browser got no response.  Just kept waiting for the Almond+ to reply.  Eventually timed out.

The Almond+ is paired with my Almond account and can see the internet.  It is plugged in to the back of my Airport router so should be visible from a Mac that is also plugged in to that Airport.

At this point, I'm not sure how I can upgrade the Almond+'s firmware if I can't get its web interface to appear...

Thoughts?

p.s. How do I change my status to Kickstarter Backer?

Have a look under Status, Web Admin in the LCD UI to verify what the IP address of your Almond+ is.
It seems like the IP address has changed somehow.

If it still doesn't work, please contact our support team.

Which port of the Almond+ should I be connecting to my existing LAN?

I am currently using the Almond+'s WAN connector for that (which has been assigned another IP address by my airport).  That IP address does not reply to a web browser enquiry either.

Instead should I be trying to access it via one of its LAN ports?

Just an update in case anyone else is having the same problem.

Called support.  It looks like the problem is that the DHCP server (on the existing LAN) and the Almond+'s built-in DHCP server were fighting each other.  They told me how to fix it:

1) Connect the WAN port of your Almond+ to your existing LAN switch with a cable
2) Unplug your Mac/PC from your LAN and instead plug it directly into your Almond+ via one of the Almond+'s LAN ports.
3) From the Mac/PC, enter 10.10.10.254 in your browser; enter the Almond+'s admin uname/pwd.
4) You then should be able to proceed with the instructions in the thread above (updating the firmware, hard reset, etc)
5) Unplug the network cables from the Almond+
6) Reconnect your Mac/PC to your existing LAN.

Hope this helps someone.
